Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, wir dürfen auf die Verlängerung der Einreichfrist bis 30. Juni 2024 für die Ausschreibung Familienunternehmen in Österreich hinweisen. Der Rudolf Sallinger Fonds prämiert wissenschaftliche Arbeiten zu Familienunternehmen in Österreich mit sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen in folgenden Kategorien: * Kategorie 1: Sozialwissenschaftliche und Betriebswirtschaftliche Fragestellungen Exposés für je eine Bachelor-, Master- bzw. Diplomarbeit sowie eine Dissertation werden mit 500 Euro, 1.000 Euro und 1.500 Euro gefördert. * Kategorie 2: Rudolf Sallinger Preis Die beste wissenschaftliche Arbeit erhält den traditionellen Rudolf Sallinger Preis. Abstract: Globally, women are having half as many children as they had just fifty years ago. Why have birth rates fallen, and how will low fertility affect our shared future? This presentations discusses the evolution of childbearing across different populations and how fertility is related to (changes in) our reproductive capacity, contraception, education, religion, partnering, policies, economics, assisted reproduction, and catastrophes. It will explore the future of family size and its impact on human welfare, women’s empowerment and the environment. The presentation argues that low fertility is on the whole a good thing, while recognizing the challenges of population aging and “coincidental” childlessness. This presentation seeks to give a balanced, integrative examination of one of the most important issues of our time -- Decline and Prosper! drives home the fact that we must ultimately adapt to a world with fewer children” About the presenter: Professor Skirbekk is founding principal researcher at the Center for Fertility and Health at the NIPH, and holds Professorships at the University of Oslo in Norway and Columbia University in the US. He has received numerous grants and awards including two ERC grants (including a new ERC Advanced Grant on male health), an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health on causes of dementia, and playing a leading role in several large EU and US consortiums. He has a proven track-record of publishing innovative research as lead or senior author in top-tiered journals such as The Lancet, Science, PNAS, Nature, Intelligence, Labor Economics, Psychological Science, Sociological Quarterly, and Demography. His research includes focusing on cognitive trajectories, global religious change, causes and consequences of fertility change as well as aging. Fajgelbaum) FIW-Spotlight: Globaler Handel und geopolitische Fragmentierung Das aktuelle FIW-Spotlight von Robert Stehrer (wiiw) zeigt, dass der Großteil der weltweiten Handelsströme auf einige wenige Länder entfällt. Neu entstehende geopolitische Ländergruppen wie die BRICS-Staaten machen etwa ein Fünftel der weltweiten Exporte aus, wobei dieser Anteil hauptsächlich auf China zurückzuführen ist. Unterteilt man die Länder in eine westliche Gruppe (einschließlich der USA und der europäischen Ökonomien) und eine auf China ausgerichtete Gruppe, so zeigt sich, dass auf erstere fast zwei Drittel des Welthandels entfallen. Wie einige neuere Studien zeigen, könnte eine zunehmende geopolitische Fragmentierung starke negative Auswirkungen für alle Länder haben. From the late 1980s onwards, its predominant, if not exclusive focus on economic growth has been increasingly shifting towards sustainable development. The delicate balance between these considerations is reflected in bilateral or multilateral negotiations, national legislation, and decisions by domestic courts or investment tribunals. One does not work without the other. To contribute to this discussion, this policy brief summarizes existing environmental provisions in investment treaties and free trade agreements to outline their potential role as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In so doing, it summarizes the positions of the relevant multilateral institutions and fora, namely the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the OECD, or the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. The general assumption is clear: While investment protection in general and investor-state-dispute settlement is under enormous pressure due to accusations of ignoring societal values such as environmental concerns, calls for disbanding it are premature. Fajgelbaum) FIW-Spotlight: Global trade and geopolitical fragmentation The latest FIW Spotlight by Robert Stehrer (wiiw) shows that the majority of global trade flows are accounted for by just a few countries. Recently emerging geopolitical country groups, such as BRICS, account for about one fifth of global exports, although this share is mostly due to China. Grouping countries into a Western group (including the US and European economies) and a group oriented towards China shows that the former accounts for almost two thirds of world trade and the latter for less than one third. As some recent literature shows, increasing geopolitical fragmentation could have strong negative impacts. Abstract: The demographic dividend describes the economic growth potential based on shifts towards a large share of working-age population in the course of the demographic transition. Given the relevance of this age-group, in the presented analyses we identify and describe past, present, and future global patterns in changes in the share of the working-age population and detect associated demographic factors. We perform our analyses for 148 countries, making use of data from the UN World Population Prospects 2022 (1950‒2100). Our results reveal distinct trajectories of changes in the share of working-age population for the past and also for the future. In addition to fertility characteristics, changes in the share of working-age population are associated with migration and population momentum – two factors that are not receiving enough attention in current discussions about the potential for future demographic dividends. About the presenter: Elke Loichinger is heading the unit “Demographic Analyses and Model Calculations, Natural Population Change” at the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. Her research covers various aspects of population ageing, global demographic trends, and national and sub-national population projections. Webinar von Nicolai Kaarsen, DØRS - Danish Economic Councils 19.06.2024, 15-16 Uhr Teilnahme über Webex ohne Anmeldung: https://oenb.webex.com/oenb/j.php?MTID=ma14ca1e52128dde4017cea7fa4981dac Abstract: During the past 20 years, Danish firms have increased their exports of goods produced abroad that never cross the Danish border (so-called merchanting and processing activities). We find that the increase is driven by a handful of superstar manufacturing firms who have expanded globally using production in other countries. The rise of these superstars and their expanded foreign activities explain a substantial share of Danish productivity growth in recent years and also drive an increase in markups and a decrease in the labor share. Besides the analysis, the presentation will include a brief overview of the main policy recommendations and comments on recent Danish productivity policy from the 2024 productivity report.
