Abstract While nouns in the German language are gendered toward males, the introduction of the "gender star" or "gender colon" have allowed for nouns to be interpreted as not assigning gender, or non-binary. Their usage however has become highly politically polarizing. Using over 40 million online job postings from 2016 to 2023, we document the rising prevalence of the gender star and colon in the German labour market, particularly in German counties with greater support for the Green party. We then study how jobseekers respond when the advertised job title includes such non-binary punctuation. Inclusive job ads receive more clicks and lead to more application starts. The positive effect is larger for the colon and holds when exploiting within firm and job title variation and looking at large companies with rapid increases over time. Finally, using a survey experiment, we investigate how such politically-charged signals in job ads affect sorting and labour market polarization. In diesem Papier liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Rolle der regulatorischen Unterschiede zwischen Deutschland und anderen EU-Ländern, die den Schattenpreis von Kohlenstoffemissionen beeinflussen. Die Autoren kalibrieren ein Modell des Melitz-Typs, das um Emissions- und Vermeidungsentscheidungen der Unternehmen erweitert wird, indem sie Daten zu Gesamtproduktion, Handel und Emissionen verwenden. Die Parameterschätzungen werden aus der deutschen Zählung des verarbeitenden Gewerbes abgeleitet. Das quantitative Modell ermöglicht es, ein Maß für die Entwicklung der regulatorischen Strenge in der EU und in Deutschland in Form eines impliziten Kohlenstoffpreises, der für Emissionen gezahlt wird, zu ermitteln. Dieser Preis spiegelt die Energie- und Kohlenstoffpreise zusätzlich zu den ordnungspolitischen Maßnahmen wider und ist von 2005 bis 2019 in den meisten Sektoren gesunken - sowohl in Deutschland als auch in anderen EU-Ländern. Der Trend ist in Deutschland stärker ausgeprägt als in der übrigen EU. In kontrafaktischen Analysen wird gezeigt, dass dieser EU-interne Unterschied die deutschen Industrieemissionen erheblich erhöht hat. Wären die impliziten Kohlenstoffpreise in der EU in gleichem Maße gesunken wie in Deutschland, wären die deutschen Emissionen deutlich niedriger gewesen. Deutschland ist in zunehmendem Maße zu einem Ort geworden, an dem Umweltverschmutzung toleriert wird. Ab April 2024 wird das BMAW monatlich aktuelle und qualitativ hochwertige Schätzungen für den österreichischen Warenverkehr im abgelaufenen Monat veröffentlichen. Neben den nominellen Werten weist der FIW Trade Indicator auch preis- und saisonbereinigte Werte aus, die Verzerrungen durch saisonale Einflüsse und Feiertage ausschalten und eine zeitnahe Beurteilung der konjunkturellen Tendenzen im Außenhandel erlauben. Das kürzlich erschienene Spotlight von Mario Holzner (wiiw) geht der Frage nach, wie realistisch die Etablierung einer neuen Weltordnung und die Ablösung des US-Dollar als globale Leitwährung sind? Abgesehen von ihrer Skepsis gegenüber dem von den USA dominierten internationalen Wirtschafts- und Finanzsystem eint die BRICS+ Mitglieder nicht viel. Die BRICS+ Staaten entzweit auch ihr unterschiedliches ökonomisches und demografisches Gewicht. Bei den globalen Rohstoffvorkommen wären die BRICS+ Mitglieder aber als Block in der Lage, den Westen gehörig unter Druck zu setzen. Durch die Aufnahme von Saudi-Arabien, des Iran und der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate kommen sie auf 43% der weltweiten Erdölproduktion. In this paper, the focus is on the role of regulatory differences between Germany and other EU countries which affect the shadow price of carbon emissions. The authors calibrate a Melitz-type model, extended by firms' emissions and abatement decisions using data on aggregate output, trade, and emissions. The parameter estimates are derived from the German Manufacturing Census. The quantitative model allows the recovery of a measure of how regulatory stringency evolved in the EU and Germany in terms of an implicit carbon price paid on emissions. This price reflects energy and carbon prices in addition to command-and-control measures and decreased from 2005 to 2019 in most sectors - both in Germany and other EU countries. The trend is more pronounced in Germany than in the rest of the EU. In counterfactual analyses, it is shown that this intra-EU difference has substantially increased German industrial emissions. Had the EU experienced the same decrease in implicit carbon prices as Germany, German emissions would have been substantially lower. Germany has increasingly become a pollution haven. In addition to the nominal values, the FIW Trade Indicator also shows price and seasonally adjusted values, which eliminate distortions caused by seasonal influences and public holidays and allow a timely assessment of economic trends in foreign trade. This means that, for the first time, timely and reliable forecasts of Austrian foreign trade are available. The recently published Spotlight by Mario Holzner (wiiw) examines the question of how realistic the establishment of a new world order and the replacement of the US dollar as the global reserve currency are. Apart from their scepticism towards the international economic and financial system dominated by the USA, the BRICS+ members do not have much in common. The BRICS+ countries are also divided by their differing economic and demographic weight. However, in terms of global raw material reserves, the BRICS+ members as a bloc would be able to put the West under considerable pressure. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, March 6th, with Angelo Zago (University of Verona) on "Trade, Quality, and Collective Reputation. The Case of Wine" Abstract: We consider an extension of the model of monopolistic competition with heterogeneous firms from Melitz and Ottaviano (2008) into several directions. On the demand side, utility depends on perceived quality, that is on a convex combination of individual firm's quality and of collective reputation. The weight on the individual firm quality increases with the degree of awareness of the representative consumer in the destination market. If the consumer is relatively unaware (new market), the collective or 'national' reputation has a bigger role in perceived quality. On the supply side, we introduce the possibility of endogenous quality choice as in Antoniades (2015), but with a more general specification to obtain correlations between sizes, sales, prices and qualities that match the European wine sector. The model enables to show how market toughness affects firm's behavior through the scope for quality differentiation. We show, among other things, that investment in quality and firms that behave as quality leaders change with the degree of consumers' expertise in the destination markets, and in a positive but decreasing fashion. Using cross- sectional firm's level data, we find that wine quality, collective reputation and consumer expertise are indeed important in making exporting more likely (extensive margins), in exporting different products, and (to some extent) also in exporting more (intensive margins). Overall, we fail to reject the null hypothesis that the degree of expertise in destination markets do not have an effect on the firms that export and the product they do export. This seems to suggest that the endogenous quality model we propose better fits the data at hand. Abstract: International migration has always been an important issue for research and policy in almost every society and globally. Discussions and studies of migration are focused primarily on voluntary migration, and little attention is given to the reasons, consequences, and potential of forced migration. Yet, forced migration, especially refugees, makes up a significant proportion of international moves, most of it being south-south in nature. The number of forcibly displaced persons in the world surpassed 108 million by the end of 2022 and there is no evidence that the scale and severity of forced migration are being reduced. A vast majority (76%) of the displaced population live in low and middle-income countries. While Syria and Afghanistan have been the top refugee-sending countries for decades, Ukraine and Gaza have also become sources of population displacement. In addition to a large-scale population displacement due to war and conflicts, a significant number of refugees are environmentally driven. Despite the increasing scale and complexity of population displacement, forced migration is still a neglected and under-researched topic within Demography. This presentation illustrates the current situation of global population displacement by region with an emphasis on population displacement within and from Afghanistan. The need for research and training programs on the demography of forced migration as well as policy implications for the host countries of a sizable number of refugees are discussed. About the presenter: Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi is an Academy Fellow at the Vienna Institute of Demography, Professor of Demography, University of Tehran (on leave), Guest Research Scholar at the International Institute of Applied System Analysis (IIASA), and Honorary Professor, School of Demography, the Australian National University. He has conducted research and widely published on Iran’s fertility transition, international and forced migration, Muslim demography, and population policies. His current research focuses on fertility declines and diversity among Muslim populations in Europe. Abbasi has served as Director of the Iran National Institute of Population Research; President of Asian Population Association, the President of the Population Association of Iran, and is a council member of the IUSSP.
