Abstract: This paper attempts to understand socioeconomic differences in the trajectory of students once they are in college. For this purpose, we combine evidence from a novel panel survey of incoming students' subjective expectations and anonymized transcript data at Arizona State University. We first show that parental education remains a strong predictor of post-enrollment educational success, even after flexibly conditioning on demographic factors and measurable dimensions of college preparation. We find that students' early university experiences play an important role in generating this educational attainment gap. First-generation students (i.e., those without a college-educated parent) are much more likely to drop out and less likely to switch majors after receiving poor grades in their introductory courses, as compared to their continuing-generation peers with identical observable academic and demographic characteristics. Survey evidence demonstrates systematic differences by parental education in students' knowledge about both their own ability and the greater institutional setting. First-generation students enter college with much more biased subjective expectations. In addition, we find evidence of the differential reactions to academic setbacks (by first-generation status) only among ex-ante less informed students and those students who have smaller social networks - this suggests that information frictions are likely instrumental in explaining students' differential reaction to poor initial grades. Finally, we show that it is possible to overcome such information frictions. Specifically, leveraging a natural experiment that nudged some students to enroll in a curated first-year experience targeted at easing the transition to college for academically marginal students, we find evidence that relatively cheap tweaks to the first-year experience can improve retention and encourage early major switching, thus narrowing post-enrollment achievement gaps. Papp) In this paper we develop and estimate a multi-sector general equilibrium growth model of education and sector-occupation choices over the life cycle. The model incorporates the task-based approach by representing jobs in different sector-occupation pairs as different bundles of tasks, requiring specific skillsets of workers. Workers are born with heterogeneous endowments of skills thatcan be improved over time by schooling and on-the-job accumulation of human capital. They supply their entire bundle of skills to a single job according toa Roy-type sorting model where their selections are along the multi-dimensional vector of skills that they possess. We use data from several U.S. sources thatallow us to estimate parameters that correspond to both the decision process of the individuals as well as the parameters that correspond to the production side of the economy. The general equilibrium nature of the model allows us to conduct several policy counterfactuals that take full account of the responses in the economy. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, May 10th, with Johannes Boehm (Sciences Po) on "Firm Adaptation in Production Networks: Evidence from Extreme Weather Events in Pakistan" Abstract: This paper considers how far private adaptation may reduce future vulnerability to climate change. Firms’ climate risk exposure depends not only on the location of production, but also on network eﬀects via the flood risk profile of suppliers and transportation links connecting trading partners. We use data on monthly firm-to-firm transactions for the near-universe of formal sector manufacturing firms in Pakistan and more than six billion observations from commercial trucks traveling on the road network from 2011 to 2018 to study adaptation of firms in production networks. We find that firms aﬀected by major floods relocate to less flood-prone areas, diversify their supplier base, and shift the composition of their suppliers towards those located in less flood-prone regions and reached via less flood-prone roads. Identification strategies that exploit both firm- and route-level flooding suggest that these responses reflect forward-looking actions to reduce future vulnerability to flood risk rather than direct eﬀects of flooding, and are consistent with experience-based Bayesian updating. The results suggest that the impacts of climate change will be mediated as firms learn from the experience of increasingly frequent climate disasters. Abstract The baby boomer generation in Britain has accumulated substantial wealth through housing and private pension wealth during the 1990s and 2000s. However, the circumstances for the younger generation in Britain are expected to differ due to considerably less favourable and highly uncertain economic and political environment in the late 2000s and 2010s. Moreover, several studies have pointed to an increasing economic inequality within the younger generation, as their socio-economic outcomes are closely linked to their parents' wealth and social capital. Motivated by this observation, this study questions how Britain's younger adults aged between 25 and 45 accumulate wealth, and whether social origin plays a role in the manner and extent of younger adults' wealth-building. To answer these questions, the study develops a typology of savers and examines whether the initial saver type membership as well as patterns of transitions across the saver types over time differ by parental homeownership. To establish saver types, it takes a Balance Sheet approach, which distinguishes asset- and debt-holding, and different types of wealth-building vehicles by factors such as risk structure, accessibility and ease of liquidation as well as amounts held in each vehicle, in order to provide nuanced picture of wealth accumulation. Individual balance sheet is built using Wealth and Assets Survey, which is a biennial study on economic circumstances of British households since 2006/8. Factor Mixture Modelling is used to establish saver types, which takes both ownership and amounts held in a certain type of wealth building vehicle into account. Transitions probabilities between 2008/10 and 2014/16 are examined using Latent Transition Analysis. The characteristics associated with a specific saver type at the initial stage and transitions probabilities over time are examined using Latent Transition Analysis in the multi-group analysis framework comparing two groups distinguished by parental homeownership. Four distinctive saver types are established: undersavers, property saver-dissavers, traditional savers and investor savers in the order of least wealthy to most wealthy group. The dominant wealth portfolio within these saver types shows that their abilities to deal with adverse effect differ substantially. The chances of being allocated to wealthier saver types are closely linked to individuals' socio-economic characteristics as well as parental homeownership. Although transition probabilities are relatively stable given a short observation period, upwards movement is more frequent among those who grew up with home-owning parents, controlling for other variables. This study's findings show how the younger generation's abilities to build wealth may differ at the earlier stage of life. Also, the findings of this study concur with the previous studies that the younger generation's economic outcomes are increasingly connected to their parents', which has substantial policy implications for inequality.
