Evidence from the U.S. Abstract: We analyze the impact of rising import competition from China on U.S. innovative activities, both at the firm level and at the industry level. Using Compustat firm-level data, we identify a negative effect of import competition on R&D expenditures of U.S. public firms. Since import competition is measured at the industry level, the average negative effect masks potential heterogeneity across firms within an industry. Indeed we find that import competition induces R&D to reallocate towards more productive, less financially constrained and more profitable firms. When we take the analysis to the industry level, the negative effect of import competition goes away. In addition, our analysis using population census data suggests that rising competition from China in manufacturing has led to reallocation of researchers towards booming service industries, including business and repairs, personal services, and financial services. This paper uses Chinese customs data to investigate the effects of AD duties on Chinese exporters, exploiting firm level data to address endogeneity concerns linked to trade protection. We find that the effects of AD duties differ strongly across destination markets and industries. Our empirical results show that the European and US markets react very differently to the imposition of duties, so that existing findings based on US data cannot easily be generalised to other countries. We find evidence that AD duties tend to drive some exporters out, while the remaining ones grow larger, implying that AD instruments may not be capable of protecting domestic industries in the long run. Finally, we find that AD duties lead to market entry of Chinese exporters into third countries as well as to increased exports to these countries by established exporters. ISGEP is a platform aimed at stimulating knowledge exchange and joint research on firm behaviour in international markets using micro-data. Our analysis is based on data from the German Tax Payer Panel (TPP) covering the entire population of taxpayers from 2001 to 2010. In particular, we pose the following questions: In what aspects does the distribution of individual market income risk differ between economic downturns and periods of economic growth? Which parts of the income distribution are affected the most and how do such potential differences translate into changes of market income inequality? In our analysis, we consider not only earnings but all components of individual market income, i.e. we distinguish between labor earnings, self-employment income, business income and capital income. Indeed we find that import competition induces R&D to reallocate towards more productive, less financially constrained and more profitable firms. When we take the analysis to the industry level, the negative effect of import competition goes away. In addition, our analysis using population census data suggests that rising competition from China in manufacturing has led to reallocation of researchers towards booming service industries, including business and repairs, personal services, and financial services.
