SMIRNOV Higher School of Economics, ‘Development Center’ Institute, Moscow Abstract Radical disagreement between ‘month-on-month’ and ‘year-on-year’ monthly statistics is identified in regional statistics published by the Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat). In view of this, an original method is proposed for estimating the level of Regional Economic Activity (REA), based on monthly official regional statistics in five key sectors of the Russian economy: industry, construction, retail trade, wholesale trade, and paid services for the population. This method transforms current ‘year-on-year’ growth rates into specially constructed dichotomous variables which eliminate the excessive volatility and inaccuracy of the initial time series. On this basis, REA indices are estimated for all Russian constituent entities. Composite REA indices for all five economic sectors, eight federal districts, and Russia as a whole are then calculated. Methods for visualising multidimensional regional data are also proposed. They allow us to track the regional peculiarities of the Russian economy and to discern the current phase of the business cycle more accurately and without any additional lag. Die Analyse der ungleichen Verteilung von Vermögen zwischen den Geschlechtern stand bisher jedoch nicht im Zentrum der Betrachtung. Dabei dient gerade das Vermögen oft als wichtiger Indikator für den Wohlstand eines Haushaltes bzw. eines Individuums. Die Untersuchung der geschlechtsspezifischen Vermögenslücke erfolgt im Rahmen dieses Berichtes zum ersten Mal für Österreich anhand von Individualdaten aus dem 2014. Auswertungen für Deutschland mit Daten des Soziooekonomischen Panels (SOEP) werden zu den Ergebnissen für Österreich in Bezug gesetzt. Das Nettovermögen ist demnach in Österreich und Deutschland ungleich verteilt mit einer geschlechtsspezifischen Vermögensdifferenz zulasten der Frauen. In österreichischen Paarhaushalten beträgt der Gender Wealth Gap im Durchschnitt 58.417 ?, Frauen besitzen demnach um 28% weniger Vermögen als Männer. Erwerbstätige Frauen in österreichischen Paarhaushalten halten durchschnittlich um 35% weniger Vermögen Für Vollzeitbeschäftigte ergibt sich ein Gender Wealth Gap zulasten der Frauen von im Durchschnitt 43%. In Deutschland beträgt der Gender Wealth Gap in Paarhaushalten durchschnittlich 40.599 ?, Frauen besitzen demnach um 32% weniger Vermögen als Männer. Dear Sir or Madam, We may remind you of the Workshop "Fiscal policy and ageing" of the Austrian Fiscal Advisory Council, which will take place on Friday, October 6, 2017, in Vienna on the premises of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. The aftermath of economic and financial crisis has been characterized by times of slow economic growth and increases in public debt to unprecedented levels for most EU member states. This came along with a shift of the focus of interest towards the short-run challenges. The limitation of fiscal space however also implies that maintaining long-run sustainability of public finances in the face of demographic change will become more challenging. The aim of the workshop is to revive the discussion of ageing and long-run fiscal sustainability. The workshop will focus on the following areas: Fiscal challenges and sustainability in an ageing society (Session I) Public spending on long term care and health (Session 2) and Pension reforms in advanced countries (Session 3). Abstract Professor Dorn will discuss the “rise of the machines,” which has fundamentally transformed the organization of work during the last four decades. While early adopters are captivated by the new technologies, many people worry that the universal use of machines will eventually lead to mass unemployment, with robots and computers substituting for human labor. The Global Economy Lecture 2017 will investigate how rapid technological progress and automation have affected the patterns of employment and unemployment levels and how they have contributed to inequality. Moreover, it will address policy challenges caused by computerization. Speaker David Dorn is Professor of International Trade and Labor Markets at the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich and Affiliated Professor at the UBS International Center of Economics in Society. He was also a visiting scholar at a number of renowned U.S. universities such as Harvard University, Boston University, MIT and the University of Chicago. Selection and Performance Effects" Abstract: Structural and Cohesion Funds are one of the key policy instruments of the European Union, aimed at fostering growth in the less developed regions of the EU. Despite the magnitude of these funds in new member states (equivalent to about 3% of GDP in Hungary) not much is known about their effects. Our paper uses firm-level balance sheet and subsidy data from Hungary to study the effects of business subsidies financed from Structural and Cohesion Funds between 2004-2014. We find strong selection both into applying and winning the grants: firms which are larger, more productive and had grown faster in the past are more likely to apply and win. We also find that many firms apply multiple times. We estimate the effect of subsidies with matching winners with non-winners to find that winning grants was associated with somewhat faster growth but was not correlated with an increase in productivity. Our results are in line with a picture that grants provide a way of financing which has a low marginal cost but requires a relatively high fixed application cost.
