Professor Dorn will discuss the “rise of the machines,” which has fundamentally transformed the organization of work during the last four decades. While early adopters are captivated by the new technologies, many people worry that the universal use of machines will eventually lead to mass unemployment, with robots and computers substituting for human labor. The Global Economy Lecture 2017 will investigate how rapid technological progress and automation have affected the patterns of employment and unemployment levels and how they have contributed to inequality. Moreover, it will address policy challenges caused by computerization. David Dorn is Professor of International Trade and Labor Markets at the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich and Affiliated Professor at the UBS International Center of Economics in Society. He was also a visiting scholar at a number of renowned U.S. universities such as Harvard University, Boston University, MIT and the University of Chicago. His research covers the interlinkages between trade, technology and the labor market. September 2017 Dritte ATHEA-Konferenz für Gesundheitsökonomie „Health services research in patients with complex needs“ Wien, 23. und 24. November 2017 Die alternde Bevölkerung stellt nicht nur in quantitativer, sondern auch in qualitativer Hinsicht eine Herausforderung an die bestehenden Gesundheitssysteme dar. Die Behandlung chronischer Erkrankungen geht häufig mit Multimorbiditäten einher, die die Anforderungen an das Management von Behandlungsabläufen und damit oft auch von unterschiedlichen Angebotsstrukturen erhöhen. Unter dem Stichwort der integrierten Versorgung werden hierzu in zahlreichen Ländern Projekte durchgeführt und Versorgungsstrukturen umgebaut, um eine abgestimmte und umfassende Versorgung auch unter diesen erschwerenden Bedingungen weiterhin gewährleisten zu können. Zur dritten ATHEA Konferenz im November 2017 sind Einreichungen zu allen aktuellen gesundheitsökonomischen und –politischen Themen willkommen, um einen Überblick über die gesundheitsökonomische Forschung in und über Österreich zu erzielen. Wir freuen uns, zwei renommierte Keynote Speaker ankündigen zu dürfen: · Prof. Dr. Ellen Nolte, MPH PhD, Honorarprofessorin an der London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) sowie European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies · Prof. Dr. Chris Bojke, MSc, Professor für Gesundheitsökonomie, Universität Leeds Ellen Nolte koordiniert am European Observatory die beiden Londoner Niederlassungen an der London School of Economics und an der London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Zuvor leitete sie das Health and Healthcare Policy Programme bei RAND Europe in Cambridge. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen einerseits im Bereich internationaler Gesundheitssystemvergleiche und andererseits in der Anpassung von Gesundheitssystemen an chronische Erkrankungen. Neben ihrer umfangreichen Publikationstätigkeit berät sie Regierungen und Institutionen, und hat auch bereits wiederholt in Österreich vorgetragen. Chris Bojke ist Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Gesundheitsökonomie an der Universität Leeds. Davor war er Senior Research Fellow am Centre for Health Economics in York. Sein besonderes Forschungsinteresse gilt großen Beobachtungsdatensätzen und ihrer Anwendung in Health Technology Assessment und Politikevaluation. Caring for persons with chronic diseases often entails the care for multimorbidity, which poses even higher demands on the management of care processes and the organization of care settings. The buzzword integrated care labels numerous projects and reforms in health care systems across countries which are aimed at achieving comprehensive, well-aligned but also sustainable care for patients with complex needs. For our third ATHEA conference, we encourage the submission of abstracts on all current topics in health economics and health policy, in order to provide a broad overview on health economic research in and about Austria. We are happy to announce two well-known keynote speakers: · Prof. Dr. Ellen Nolte, MPH PhD, honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies · Prof. Dr. Chris Bojke, MSc, chair in health economics, University of Leeds Ellen Nolte currently serves as coordinator of the two London hubs of the European Observatory, at the London School of Economics and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She previously acted as director of the Health and Healthcare Policy Programme at RAND Europe in Cambridge. Her research focus is on international health system comparisons and on the impact of chronic diseases on health reforms. Furthermore, she acts as consulter for governments and institutions, and has previously presented her research in Austria on multiple occasions. Chris Bojke is chair in health economics at the University of Leeds. He previously worked as Senior Research Fellow at the York Centre for Health Economics. He is an empirical health economist specialising in the analysis of observational datasets and their role in health technology assessment and policy evaluation. Although economic geography Internet-related research has been focussing on infrastructural measures, such approaches cannot capture the transformative nature of current Internet trends including the spreading of Social Network Sites (SNSs). This paper offers a new theoretical proposal to unpack the spatial economic effects that the Internet and SNSs generate nowadays through the enrichment of the social capital of individuals and the aggregated social capital of places. These effects complement existing agglomeration forces, but also transcend space and generate benefits for places outside the traditional core. Selection and Performance Effects" Abstract: Structural and Cohesion Funds are one of the key policy instruments of the European Union, aimed at fostering growth in the less developed regions of the EU. Despite the magnitude of these funds in new member states (equivalent to about 3% of GDP in Hungary) not much is known about their effects. Our paper uses firm-level balance sheet and subsidy data from Hungary to study the effects of business subsidies financed from Structural and Cohesion Funds between 2004-2014. We find strong selection both into applying and winning the grants: firms which are larger, more productive and had grown faster in the past are more likely to apply and win. We also find that many firms apply multiple times. We estimate the effect of subsidies with matching winners with non-winners to find that winning grants was associated with somewhat faster growth but was not correlated with an increase in productivity. Our results are in line with a picture that grants provide a way of financing which has a low marginal cost but requires a relatively high fixed application cost. REMINDER Dear Madams and Sirs, We may remind you of the 81st East Jour Fixe of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) on the topic of “Nonperforming loans in CESEE: macroeconomic dimension and resolution strategies,” which will take place on September 18, 2017. Since the global economic and financial crisis, nonperforming loans (NPLs) have increasingly moved into the spotlight as NPL ratios quickly reached unprecedented levels. Recent observations show that high NPLs are both a threat to financial stability and a major stumbling block to economic growth in many countries. Starting from these insights, the OeNB’s 81st East Jour Fixe will focus on the macroeconomic dimension of NPLs and on resolution strategies particularly for CESEE. Session 1 will set the stage for further discussion by clearly defining NPLs, comparing NPL volumes in CESEE and the euro area. Session 2 will discuss the determinants and macroeconomic impact of NPLs both from a household perspective, using survey data, and from a macroeconomic perspective. Session 3 will present various stakeholders’ views on progress made in NPL resolution. Workshop Arbeitsmarktökonomie 2017 Termin: 10. November 2017 Ort: Institut für Höhere Studien, Josefstädter Str. 39, 1080 Wien Website: http://www.ihs.ac.at/de/forschungsgruppen/arbeitsmarkt-und-sozialpolitik/wo… Ziel ist es, ein akademisches Forum zur Diskussion aktueller Forschungsarbeiten mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus der Arbeitsmarktökonomie zu schaffen. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte sind Themen des Arbeitsmarktes, der Sozialpolitik, der Einkommensverteilung, sowie verwandter Bereiche; wobei empirische als auch theoretische Aspekte behandelt werden können. Im Workshop soll eine offene und kollegiale Diskussion stattfinden, auch vorläufige und kontroversielle Arbeiten sind daher willkommen. Es können sowohl Abstracts als auch fertige Papiere eingereicht werden. Bitte senden Sie Vortragsangebote bis zum 2. Oktober 2017 elektronisch an iris.troppert(a)ihs.ac.at<mailto:iris.troppert@ihs.ac.at> . Die Auswahl der Beiträge erfolgt durch die OrganisatorInnen und wird bis Mitte Oktober erfolgen. Angestrebt ist eine Dauer von 20 min je Vortrag mit anschließender Diskussion. Das detaillierte Programm wird im Laufe des Oktobers bekanntgegeben. Die Anmeldung für nicht vortragende InteressentInnen wird ebenfalls ab Mitte Oktober auf der Website möglich sein. Eine diesbezügliche Einladung folgt noch.
