Dear Members, WU is currently inviting applications for the position of a full professor of Microeconomics and Digitalization at the Department of Economics. Digitalization has changed the way businesses operate today and how they will be run in the future. Differences may lie in consumer behavior, firm behavior, and in the modes of competition. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on microeconomics with a specific focus on the digital economy. Candidates are expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in their field. Depending on the candidate's academic credentials, the employment contract can be concluded either as a permanent employment contract or as a fixed-term employment contract with the option of a permanent extension. Claudio Borio is one of the internationally most recognized monetary policy experts. Monetary policy had a crucial role in fighting both the Great Financial Crisis of 2007/09 as well as the current Covid-19 crisis. Central banks moved into completely new – often unchartered waters – in order to contain the economic effects of the crises. Now, several large central banks, like the U.S. Fed or the European Central Bank, are in the process of reviewing their monetary policy strategies. Thus, what will be the future of monetary policy? Family care across the life course*** In October 2020, The World Health Organization announced the Decade of Healthy Ageing. Its vision is to “/provide the opportunity for rethinking not just what older age is but also how our whole lives might unfold/”. In this presentation, Norah Keating will talk about how the unfolding of life courses of family carers might contribute to this larger agenda and to the mission of the Sustainable Development Goals to /leave no one behind/. Keating and her team have conceptualized trajectories of family care across the life course and have provided evidence of how different care pathways can lead to social exclusion in later life. The focus of this presentation is on findings from Canada on diversity of life course patterns of care. The study sample, drawn from a Statistics Canada national survey of family care, comprised all Canadians aged 65 and older who had ever provided care (N = 3,299). Latent Profile Analysis yielded five distinct care trajectories: /Compressed Generational/, /Broad Generational/, /Intensive Parent Care/,/Career Care /and /Serial Care/. They differed in age of first care experience, number of care episodes, total years of care and amount of overlap among episodes. The five trajectories identified provide the basis for further understanding how time and events unfold in various ways across life courses of care. A challenge is presented to find ways to temper a ‘families by stealth’ approach so that family carers are not left behind. Liebe Leute, die nächste NOeG Tagung wird in Innsbruck stattfinden und zwar vom 24. bis 25. Juni 2021. Attached schicke ich euch den Call for Papers. Das Generalthema der Tagung ist "(Un)Ethical Behavior in Markets", es sind aber wie immer Einreichungen aus allen NOeG-relevanten Bereichen willkommen. Ob die Tagung in Präsenz oder online stattfinden wird, steht noch nicht fest - wir planen im Moment für Präsenz sind aber darauf gefasst, dass wir eventuell kurzfristig umdisponieren müssen. Ich wünsche euch feine Feiertage - trotz aller Widrigkeiten. [David Henig]David Hening David Henig ist Direktor des UK Trade Policy Project. Als führender Experte für die Entwicklung der britischen Handelspolitik nach dem Brexit war er 2017 Mitbegründer des UK Trade Forum, das Experten der britischen Handelspolitik zusammenbringt, um diese Themen zu diskutieren und zu analysieren. David Henig kam 2018 zum European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), nachdem er mehrere Jahre lang für die britische Regierung an Handels- und Investitionsthemen gearbeitet hatte. Er hat sich während der dreieinhalbjährigen Verhandlungen intensiv mit TTIP beschäftigt, insbesondere in Bezug auf regulatorische Kohärenz, TBT und nachhaltige Entwicklung. Nach dem Votum des britischen Referendums half David Henig beim Aufbau des neuen Ministeriums für internationalen Handel, beteiligte sich an vielen der ersten Arbeitsgruppen des Vereinigten Königreichs mit Nicht-EU-Ländern und legte Optionen für ein Engagement mit den USA fest. Er ist Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen Außenhandelsökonomie, empirische Industrieökonomie und angewandte Ökonometrie. Harald Oberhofer studierte an der Universität Innsbruck und promovierte in Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften an der Universität Innsbruck. The Nobel Prize in layperson’s terms The research behind the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences Nobel Prizes are awarded every year in December, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Nobel laureates are celebrated in the media, but hardly anyone knows anything about the research that goes on behind the scenes. We plan to change that. In cooperation with experts, we will be introducing the work of the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in terms that even laypeople can understand. We will analyze the innovative power of the work and discuss its significance and potential applications in practice.
