First, to communicate new directions of research at the Danish Center for Population Research in Odense to explore potential areas of common interest with researchers at WIC. These include, among others, research on fertility, regional demography, and the interplay between demography and climate change. And second, to present recent results on mortality patterns and the rate of aging in humans, primates, and other species to discuss if and how existing theories and modeling within evolutionary demography, optimization approaches across disciplines and other approaches may help explain emerging regularities and apparent constraints on the rate of aging. To reach the target of the Paris Agreement, it may be necessary to link trade and environmental policy, whereby one way of linking the two policy areas is to include environmental provisions (EPs) in trade agreements. Several motives for including environmental concerns in trade agreements exist, ranging from promoting environmental cooperation and ensuring a level playing field to pursuing protectionist interests. In principle, the inclusion of environmental aspects is not a new development. Since the 1990s, EPs have been frequently integrated into trade agreements, for example on issues such as hazardous waste, deforestation or biodiversity protection. In recent years, as climate initiatives have gained prominence at the EU level, the number of EPs in trade agreements has steadily increased. Thereby, the inclusion of these concerns is very heterogeneous in terms of the subject matter and enforceability. A closer look at the enforceability indicator is crucial, because if EPs are not legally enforceable, addressing environmental concerns may not have an impact on trade and the environment. The European Commission is aware of this issue and therefore published the review of its policy chapter on trade and sustainable development in June 2022. This identifies how the contribution of EU trade agreements to promoting environmental protection can be improved, mentioning, among other actions, the strengthening of enforcement through trade sanctions as a last resort. Whether the current changes are effective in terms of environmental and trade impacts will be seen in further research. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, October 12th, with David de la Croix (UCLouvain) on "Nepotism vs. Intergenerational Transmission of Human Capital in Academia (1088-1800)" Abstract: We build a comprehensive database of father-son pairs in academia, measure their publications, and develop a general method to disentangle two determinants of occupational persistence: nepotism vs. inherited human capital. This requires jointly addressing measurement error in human capital and selection from nepotism. Exploiting multi-generation correlations and parent-child distributional differences, we identify the structural parameters of a Markov process of intergenerational transmission with nepotism. The human capital elasticity is lower than in standard multi-generation estimates ignoring nepotism. Nepotism was lower in science vs. law, in Protestant institutions, and declined during the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, testifying to the rise of meritocracy. Dear colleagues, The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) is looking for *a Pre-Doc or Post-Doc Economist specialised in European economic policy or macroeconomics (m/f/d).* *Major tasks:* • Widen our expertise on economic policy in Europe and beyond as part of a new, growing research group • Do applied empirical research in the context of new projects on macroeconomics and European economic policy • Develop and conduct your own research on macroeconomics and economic policy • Contribute to bringing our research findings into the public debate *Desired qualifications:* • Master’s or PhD in economics (or related fields of study; e.g. political economy or economic history) • Pronounced interest in empirical research • Skills in econometrics/quantitative research methods • Existing research experience is desirable but not strictly necessary • Excellent command of English • Language skills in German are helpful but not required • High capacity for teamwork • Interest in economic policy debates *Closing date for applications: *October 20th, 2022 *Start*: as early as possible The position is *limited to two years *in the first instance, but will likely be extended into permanent employment following a satisfactory probationary period.
