Abstract: Labor market tightness following the height of the Covid-19 pandemic led to an unexpected compression in the US wage distribution that reflects, in part, an increase in labor market competition. Rapid relative wage growth at the bottom of the distribution reduced the college wage premium and counteracted approximately one-quarter of<https://forms.office.com/e/N0RqvNyCiX> the four-decade increase in aggregate 90-10 log wage inequality. Wage compression was accompanied by rapid nominal wage growth and rising job-to-job separations—especially among young non-college (high school or less) workers. At the state-level, post-pandemic labor market tightness became strongly predictive of price increases (price-Phillips curve), real wage growth among low-wage workers (wage-Phillips curve), and aggregate wage compression. Simultaneously, the wage-separation elasticity—a key measure of labor market competition—rose among young non-college workers, with wage gains concentrated among workers who changed employers and industries. Seen through the lens of a canonical job ladder model, the pandemic increased the elasticity of labor supply to firms in the low-wage labor market, reducing employer market power and spurring rapid relative wage growth among young non-college workers who disproportionately moved from lower-paying to higher-paying and potentially more-productive jobs. Abstract: Unlike the experience of many other countries, India’s demographic changes is unconventional and has its own specificities. As a result, the implications of demographic transition in India will be different. While the implications in terms of demographic dividend potential is widely discussed, there was limited attention on the family change due to demographic changes. This descriptive paper presents a demographic profiling of family change in India using multiple data sources. Our findings suggest that insignificant but noticeable emerging traits of family change in India. However, given its unconventional path of demographic transition, the changes are weaker relative to what was observed in developed countries. About the presenter: K S James is a visiting senior research scholar at IIASA. He was previously, the Director and Senior Professor at the IIPS, Mumbai, India. He holds a postdoctoral training from Harvard University, USA and Ph.D from JNU, New Delhi. He works extensively on demographic changes with focus on population and development in India. He has published widely on demographic transition and demographic dividend in India. First, the impact of inflation expectations on durable consumption varies over time and depends on the expected inflation regime. Anticipating rising inflation relative to positive inflation enhances the readiness to spend on durables during periods of surging inflation but not during deflationary times. Moreover, the absence of explicit inflation expectations reduces consumption propensity, particularly during times of surging inflation. Second, outside the stable inflation range (2-3%), individual expected inflation levels drive the variance of aggregate inflation expectations (intensive margin). However, it is the anticipation of higher or positive inflation (extensive margin) that influences the willingness to consume. These findings suggest regime- and agent-specific Euler equations.
