To this end, we develop a quantitative macroeconomic model with heterogeneous agents and occupational choice in which entrepreneurs can avoid taxes in two ways. On the extensive margin, entrepreneurs can choose the legal form of their business organization to reduce their tax burden. On the intensive margin, entrepreneurs can shift their income between different tax bases. In a quantitative application to the US economy, we find that tax avoidance lowers productive efficiency, generates sizable welfare losses, and reduces the effectiveness of the top marginal tax rate at lowering inequality. Tax avoidance reduces the optimal top marginal income tax rate from 47% to 43%. Dear all, our next seminar speaker at CEU is Marti Mestieri (Barcelona GSE and Universitat Pompeu Fabra), who'll present "Structural Transformation in Innovation" (the paper is joint with Diego Comin and Danial Lashkari) -- you are cordially invited to attend his in-person seminar. Abstract: We document structural change in innovation using historical patent data from the 1850s and R&D expenditure and TFP growth since 1947. Innovation moved from agricultural sectors to manufacturing and subsequently to services. To account for this structural change in innovation, we develop a multi-sector endogenous growth model in which the direction of innovation evolves endogenously. The model provides a general equilibrium framework that incorporates innovation's classical demand-pull and technology-push drivers. Sectors differ in innovation technologies and how much they benefit from knowledge spillovers (technology push). Due to nonhomotheticity in demand, relative sectors' market sizes move towards income-elastic sectors along the growth process (demand pull). A robust prediction is that the innovation growth rate is asymptotically higher in more income-elastic sectors. A calibrated version of our model can account for the joint structural change in innovation and sectoral output observed in the US. Our framework can also be used to assess future paths of sectoral productivity (to evaluate the potential extent of Baumol's disease) and optimal innovation policy. Abstract: This study analyses various factors that have an impact on environmental and socio-economic changes and thereby people’s displacement and migration. Data from empirical research with local people from 2011 and follow-up focus group discussions and interviews in 2022 were used. The study identifies that shifting traditional land use patterns from rice farming to shrimp cultivation has generated environmental and socioeconomic transformation. A significant decrease in household resilience has shifted vulnerable people away from their regional contexts, ranging from 1 to 28 weeks. The situation has further worsened because of the Covid-19-induced lockdown and restrictions since seasonal migrants had to return home. So far, governance of migration has not been effectively mainstreamed in the current policy regimes, which presents a concern. The study recommends that transformation strategies may help to diversify sources of income and approve the financial situation of many local dwellers. About the presenter: Mehdi’s research focuses on environmental migration, climate change adaptation and governance, land use change, and climate movement strategies in Bangladesh and Australia. He has been involved in several collaborative research projects and is currently part of a collaborative project with the University of Education Freiburg, Germany. He has published research papers as book chapters and referred journals and presented papers at international conferences. Mehdi is currently working at Macquarie University, Australia and is a Stream Member of the Environmental Humanities Research Group. Abstract Measures of net worth, as they are used for the analysis of large household surveys like the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) and the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS), are typically defined as the sum of financial and real assets minus the value of outstanding debt. This concept is based on a definition of “marketable wealth” as has been proposed by the OECD and other institutions. The recent years have, however, shown an increasing interest in the notion of “augmented wealth”, i.e. a concept of wealth that also includes the present value of other, nonmarketable private or public entitlements. This refers, in particular, to the value of public pension entitlements (sometimes called “social security wealth”), but potentially also to other elements like the entitlements to future health care benefits in the context of an income-based public health insurance system or the implicit subsidies due to social housing programs. The existence of these additional components of augmented wealth is likely to have an important impact on crucial economic decisions like saving, labor supply, and retirement.
