Dear colleagues, the Department of Economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business would like to invite you to a Workshop on Dynamic Macroeconomic in honour of Ingrid Kubin. The aim of the workshop is to discuss recent developments in the field and to celebrate the research contributions of Ingrid Kubin on the occasion of her retirement. The workshop will be held on September 19, 2023 in Festsaal 2 (WU Campus, Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna). It will be composed of a scientific part, where modern work on dynamic macroeconomics will be presented, and a festive event where the academic contributions of Ingrid Kubin during her career will be commemorated. The scientific part of the workshop will have a morning and afternoon session, and the festive event will take place at 16:00. Abstract: Homemaking is an important precursor to children. However, housing prices in the United Kingdom have skyrocketed, leading to more young families foregoing homeownership and staying in private rent. Expensive housing undercuts the ability to obtain affordable, adequate, and stable housing, needed to have (another) child. On the other hand, homemaking and homeownership is an investment in the future. Couples preparing for children may view their housing needs very differently than those without fertility desires. In this study, I examine the relationship between household-level housing expenditure and the likelihood of first, second, and third birth. I find evidence that families invest in housing to have children. However, this is mitigated by other factors like women’s relationship with the labour market and overcrowding. The association appears to be parity specific, with negative relationship appearing between higher housing expenditure and second and third birth. Families being priced out of the local market, unable to find adequate housing, may delay additional children or ultimately decrease family size. About the presenter: Brian Buh is a research assistant on the BIRTHLIFE project at the Vienna Institute of Demography. He is a doctoral student in demography at the University of Vienna. He is interested in the competing and complementary life course, specifically around issues of family formation, employment, housing, income, and meso-level factors. Dear all, our next speaker at CEU is Nadya Malenko (Michigan), and you are cordially invited to attend her in-person lecture, titled "The Voting Premium" (joint work with Doron Levit and Ernst Maug). Time and venue: February 21, Tuesday, 11.15am - 12.30pm, in room C322 at CEU, 51 Quellenstrasse 1100 Vienna. Abstract: This paper develops a unified theory of blockholder governance and the voting premium. It explains how a voting premium emerges when a minority blockholder tries to influence the composition of the shareholder base, in a setting without takeovers and controlling shareholders. The model shows that empirical measures of the voting premium generally do not reflect the value of voting rights, and that the voting premium can be negligible even when the allocation of voting rights is important. Moreover, the model can explain a negative voting premium, which has been documented in several studies. It arises because of free-riding by dispersed shareholders on the blockholder's trades, which increases the price impact of trading voting shares and makes them less liquid than non-voting shares. The model also has novel implications for the relationship between the voting premium and the severity of conflicts of interest between shareholders, the price of a separately traded vote, and competition for control among blockholders. Dear colleagues, we cordially invite you to consider the attached Call for Papers: Annual Meeting of the Austrian Economic Association (NOeG) September 28-29, 2023, University of Salzburg “Economics in Times of Uncertainty” A war on the EU’s doorstep, skilled labor shortages, AI-driven automation, supply chain disruptions, high inflation levels and a looming threat of stagflation – the current economic environment is characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. This year’s conference of the Austrian Economic Organization (NOeG) aims to discuss the implications of this uncertainty on consumers, firms and governments, labor and financial markets, industrial organization, and fiscal and monetary policy. The organizers invite submissions of full papers on these topics as well as from all areas of Economics and Finance. Keynote Speakers Claudia Steinwender (LMU Munich) Maximilian Kasy (University of Oxford) Submission We invite full papers or extended abstracts on the conference topic as well as all other fields of economics to be submitted until May 1, 2023, via http://www.conftool.com/noeg-2023. We further invite the submission of whole sessions (four papers related to a common topic) from all fields in economics until May 1, 2023, to noeg2023(a)plus.ac.at. Notification regarding acceptance will be sent out by June 15, 2023. Publication of Papers After peer-review accepted papers may be published in a special conference issue of Empirica: Journal of European Economics. In case you would like your paper to be considered for the special issue please indicate this on the submission website. Young Economist Award The Austrian Economic Association offers a prize of EUR 750 for outstanding papers – to be presented at the conference – by economists up to the age of 35 years. For joint papers, this age limit holds for all co-authors. Please indicate your eligibility for the award on the submission website. Registration Please register for the conference by July 15, 2023, at the latest.
