The Effect of the Great Recession on U.S. Fertility: Causal Estimates from a Novel Cohort Discontinuity Design Lawrence L. WU, New York University Abstract: We employ a novel cohort discontinuity design to identify the causal effect of the Great Recession on the fertility of single-year cohorts of U.S. women. This design uses the exogenous shock of the Great Recession and demographic projection methods to identify causal effects that are cohort specific. Effects were negative across cohorts and varied considerably for white and black women. Declines were most pronounced for cohorts in their teens and 20s during the Great Recession, with relative declines of 7--30% and absolute declines of 0.013--0.031 births per woman. In a final set of analyses, we followed cohorts forward in time to assess their cumulative fertility as observed in 2022 and as projected to 2037. These analyses suggest that were the Great Recession to have a permanent quantum effect, lifetime fertility will nevertheless be likely to remain at or near replacement for those who experienced the sharpest fertility declines during the Great Recession. About the presenter: Lawrence L. Wu is Professor of Sociology and Director of the NYU Population Center at New York University. Prior to NYU, he was a faculty member at Princeton and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has held visiting positions at Columbia and Yale. He is a social and family demographer whose research areas include fertility, family structure and family change, cohabitation and marriage, marital and union dissolution, causal inference, and event history methods. Our next seminar speaker at CEU is Julian Martinez-Iriarte (UC Santa Cruz), who will talk about “Bounds for within-household encouragement designs with interference". Abstract: "We study partial identification of direct and spillover effects in settings with strategic interaction and discrete treatments, outcomes, and instruments. Motivated by encouragement designs, we consider intra-household games shaped by a policymaker’s randomized assignment of incentives. Treatment take-up is modeled as a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium among k decision-makers, with outcomes determined by their joint take-up profile. We characterize the set of latent types consistent with equilibrium behavior and exclusion restrictions, and derive the full space of compatible type profiles. Additional structure—such as symmetry, strategic complementarity or substitution, monotonicity, and homogeneity—can be imposed flexibly to tighten the identified set. For any combination of assumptions, we compute sharp bounds on parameters of interest via a simple Python/R linear programming routine. We formalize a notion of non-refutable and irrelevant restrictions, provide their geometric characterization, and discuss implications for empirical practice. Our framework enables researchers to assess both the identifying power and robustness of structural assumptions in applied settings." The year the conference is about the challenges small and medium-sized European economies face in financing productivity, innovation, and the green transition, often within tight fiscal constraints and bank-dominated financial systems. Phanish Puranam is Professor of Strategy and Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Strategy and Organisational Design at INSEAD. His research focuses on the design and functioning of organizations and how we can make them better and more effective. As a recognized expert in organizational design, he is currently investigating how intelligent algorithms relate to organizations—whether as tools, cooperation partners, or templates for new forms of organization. Liebe Kolleg*innen, sowohl Bund, Länder als auch Gemeinden haben einen beachtlichen Konsolidierungsbedarf zu bewältigen. Doch trifft dies wirklich alle gleichermaßen? Im Rahmen der Impulskonferenz 2025 wollen wir der Frage nachgehen, wie eine erfolgreiche und abgestimmte Konsolidierung im Bundesstaat aussieht – und ob bzw. wie sie gelingen kann. Auch soll das Potenzial von Einsparungen bei ausgewählten Maßnahmen eingeschätzt werden, wie etwa durch Infrastrukturabstimmung und -rückbau, Reformen bei Transfers zwischen den Ebenen, durch Reduktion freiwilliger Leistungen.
