Dear all, we want to invite you to our next ECON Theory and Policy Seminar talks in January 2023: Thursday, January 12, 2023 form 5:00-6:30pm (Seminarroom DB04 yellow, Freihaus Building, yellow area, 4th floor) Falling Behind: Has Rising Inequality Fueled the American Dept Boom? Fabian Greimel (Univ. of Amsterdam) https://www.greimel.eu/ We evaluate the hypothesis that rising inequality was a causal source of the US household debt boom since 1980.The mechanism builds on the observation that households care about their social status. To keep up with the ever richer Joneses, the middle class substitutes status-enhancing houses for status-neutral consumption. These houses are mortgage-financed, creating a debt boom across the income distribution. Using astylized model we show analytically that aggregate debt increases as top incomes rise. In a quantitative general equilibrium model we show that Keeping up with the Joneses and rising income inequality generate 60% of the observed boom in mortgage debt and 50% of the house price boom. Finally, we provide novel empirical evidence on the relationship between top incomes and household debt. Mortgage debt rose substantially more in US states that experienced stronger growth in top incomes. There is no such relationship between top incomes and non-mortgage debt. These findings support to the importance of the comparisons channel. and Friday, January 13, 2023 from 12:00-1:00pm (Seminarroom DB10 yellow, Freihaus Building, yellow area, 10th floor) Matching Through Search Channels Leo Kaas (Goethe University Frankfurt) https://sites.google.com/site/leojkaas/?pli=1 Firms and workers predominately match via job postings, networks of personal contacts or the public employment agency, all of which help to ameliorate search and information frictions in the labor market. In this paper we investigate the extent to which these search channels have differential effects on labor market outcomes. Using novel survey-administrative data for Germany we find that (i) low-wage firms and low-wage workers are more likely to find matches via networks or the public agency, while high-wage firms and high-wage workers succeed more often via job postings; (ii) networks and job postings help to poach and to attract high-wage workers, differentially across firm wage ranks. To evaluate the implications of our findings for labor market sorting, worker turnover and wage inequality, we structurally estimate an equilibrium job ladder model featuring two-sided heterogeneity and multiple search channels. Our results point at an important role of networks for labor market sorting, while the public employment agency has only a modest impact on unemployment, even for low-productivity workers. Motivation Monetary policy strategy reviews conducted in the early 2020s by several central banks were informed by a persistent undershooting of inflation targets. A key aim was thus to ensure the effectiveness of monetary policy at the effective lower bound on interest rates, and to bring inflation and inflation expectations back up to target. Given the dramatic overshooting of inflation above target starting from 2021, the question arises whether the analyses made at the time were overly focused on a particular state of the world and failed to be robust to the possibility of dramatically and fast-changing circumstances. The current environment is characterized by higher volatility and higher uncertainty and has shown how large and sudden shocks in a matter of months can sharply change economic and financial conditions, not only locally but also globally. The conference aims to explore avenues to render central banks’ strategies and analytical tools more robust and resilient to unexpected changes in the conditions under which they may need to operate. How to make monetary policy decisions robust and resilient to uncertain outcomes. Abstract: This paper examines the impact of coalitions on the economic costs of the 2012 Iran and 2014 Russia sanctions. By estimating and simulating a quantitative general equilibrium trade model under different coalition set-ups, we (i) dissect welfare losses for sanction-senders and target; (ii) compare prospective coalition partners and; (iii) provide bounds for the sanctions potential — the maximum welfare change attainable — when sanctions are scaled vertically, i.e. across sectors up to an embargo, or horizontally, i.e. across countries up to a global regime. To gauge the significance of simulation outcomes, we implement a Bayesian bootstrap procedure that generates confidence bands. We find that the implemented measures against Iran and Russia inflicted considerable economic harm, yielding 32 – 37% of the vertical sanctions' potential. Our key finding is that coalitions lower the average welfare loss incurred from sanctions relative to unilateral implementation. They also increase the welfare loss imposed on Iran and Russia. Adding China to the coalition further amplifies the welfare loss by 79% for Iran and 22% for Russia. Finally, we quantify transfers that would equalize losses across coalition members. These hypothetical transfers can be seen as a sanctions-equivalent of NATO spending goals and provide a measure of the relative burden borne by coalition countries. Abstract: This paper examines the impact of coalitions on the economic costs of the 2012 Iran and 2014 Russia sanctions. By estimating and simulating a quantitative general equilibrium trade model under different coalition set-ups, we (i) dissect welfare losses for sanction-senders and target; (ii) compare prospective coalition partners and; (iii) provide bounds for the sanctions potential — the maximum welfare change attainable — when sanctions are scaled vertically, i.e. across sectors up to an embargo, or horizontally, i.e. across countries up to a global regime. To gauge the significance of simulation outcomes, we implement a Bayesian bootstrap procedure that generates confidence bands. We find that the implemented measures against Iran and Russia inflicted considerable economic harm, yielding 32 – 37% of the vertical sanctions' potential. Our key finding is that coalitions lower the average welfare loss incurred from sanctions relative to unilateral implementation. They also increase the welfare loss imposed on Iran and Russia. Adding China to the coalition further amplifies the welfare loss by 79% for Iran and 22% for Russia. Finally, we quantify transfers that would equalize losses across coalition members. These hypothetical transfers can be seen as a sanctions-equivalent of NATO spending goals and provide a measure of the relative burden borne by coalition countries. The total amount of the award is € 5.000,00 and can be divided among several young female scientists. The actual distribution of the prize money depends on the quality and number of submissions and will be made by a selection committee. ATHEA invites all interested PhD candidates from Austrian universities and research institutions to present their PhD project on health economics and policy. This changed with the COVID-19 pandemic, which had an impact on societies and health systems world-wide and demonstrated most vividly that health systems do not exist independently of each other. As this year’s general conference theme, we therefore aim to have a look beyond the borders of Europe and see what health economics can contribute to these countries. In order to gain a better understanding of the field, we will organise a thematic stream and invite experts as keynote speakers: Janina Steinert is Professor of Global Health at the Technical University of Munich’s School of Governance and Research Associate at the University of Oxford Marc Suhrcke is Professor of Global Health Economics at the University of York and Senior Researcher at the Luxembourg Institute for Socio-Economic Research (tbc) As in previous years, submissions for presentation are welcome in all fields of health economics and health policy, including long-term care, and are not restricted to the conference topic. Papp) In this paper we develop and estimate a multi-sector general equilibrium growth model of education and sector-occupation choices over the life cycle. The model incorporates the task-based approach by representing jobs in different sector-occupation pairs as different bundles of tasks, requiring specific skillsets of workers. Workers are born with heterogeneous endowments of skills that can be improved over time by schooling and on-the-job accumulation of human capital. They supply their entire bundle of skills to a single job according toa Roy-type sorting model where their selections are along the multi-dimensional vector of skills that they possess. We use data from several U.S. sources that allow us to estimate parameters that correspond to both the decision process of the individuals as well as the parameters that correspond to the production side of the economy. The general equilibrium nature of the model allows us to conduct several policy counterfactuals that take full account of the responses in the economy. The Vienna School of International Studies (Diplomatische Akademie Wien) is proposing the appointment of a Postdoctoral Fellow in International Studies (Economics) for two years, from 25 September 2023. The successful candidate must hold – or have evidence of the imminent completion of – a doctorate in Economics. We seek candidates working in all areas of empirical macroeconomics, including but not limited to monetary policy and central banking, international economics and international finance, text mining, growth econometrics and developing economics as well as environmental economics. Excellent knowledge of econometrics, strong coding skills (preferably in the software R) as well as previous teaching experience are required. Previously taught courses in introductions to quantitative methods are an asset.
