Title of the seminar: "It Hurts to Ask" (with Ania Jaroszewicz (Harvard), George Loewenstein (Carnegie Mellon)). Abstract: We analyze the offering, asking, and granting of help or other benefits as a three-stage game with bilateral private information between a person in need of help and a potential help-giver. Asking entails the risk of rejection, which can be painful: since unawareness of the need can no longer be an excuse, a refusal reveals that the person in need, or the relationship, is not valued very much. We show that a failure to ask can occur even when most helpers would help if told about the need, and that even though a greater need makes help both more valuable and more likely to be granted, it can reduce the propensity to ask. Furthermore, when potential helpers concerned about the recipient's ask-shyness can make spontaneous offers, this can turn out to be a double-edged sword: offering reveals a more caring type and helps solve the failure-to-ask problem, but not offering reveals a not-so-caring one, and this itself deters asking. This discouragement effect can also generate a trap where those in need wait for an offer, while potential helpers wait for an ask, resulting in significant inefficiencies. Title of the seminar: "Worker Beliefs About Outside Options" (with Simon Jäger (MIT), Christopher Roth (U Cologne), Nina Roussille (LSE)). Time and venue: December 13, Tuesday, 11.15am-12.30pm, 51 Quellenstrasse 1100 Vienna, room: B505. Abstract: Workers wrongly anchor their beliefs about outside options on their current wage. In particular, low-paid workers underestimate wages elsewhere. We document this anchoring bias by eliciting workers' beliefs in a representative survey in Germany and comparing them to measures of actual outside options in linked administrative labor market data. In an equilibrium model, such anchoring can give rise to monopsony and labor market segmentation. In line with the model, misperceptions are particularly pronounced among workers in low-wage firms. If workers had correct beliefs, at least 10% of jobs, concentrated in low-wage firms, would not be viable at current wages. Abstract: The global automotive sector is undergoing major structural changes which in the next decades will pose significant challenges to the sector, but also offer opportunities. Highlighting three major disruptive trends, (i) shifts of global automotive production towards Asia, in particular China, (ii) trends in e-mobility, and (iii) problems in supply chains, this article shows how Austria and the Central and East European automotive sector have faced these shifts. Overall, the EU-CEE countries have benefited from the relocation of automotive companies to emerging countries and have been integrated into global, in particular German supply chains during the last thirty years. The e-revolution started off in 2020 and the EU-CEE had a rather good start. As the automotive industry is a key sector in the region, the electric transformation is vital for their future. While there are some positive trends, risks are manifold, and further efforts have to be undertaken so as not to be left behind. Title of the seminar: "Stand Out from the Millions: Market Congestion and Information Friction on Global E-Commerce Platforms" (joint with Maggie X. Chen, Jin Liu, Xiaosheng Mu, Daniel Yi Xu). Abstract: We investigate how market congestion and information friction affect firm dynamics and market efficiency in global e-commerce. Observational data and self-collected quality measures from AliExpress suggest significant demand frictions and potential misallocation in the online market. A randomized experiment that offers new exporters exogenous demand and information shocks demonstrates the limited ability of existing platform mechanisms to help small sellers overcome the demand frictions. We show theoretically and quantitatively that having a large number of market participants undermines the functioning of existing online mechanisms and hinders the discovery of high-quality sellers. Policy counterfactuals highlight that blanket-wide onboarding initiatives can aggravate market congestion, slow down the resolution of the information problem, and result in market misallocation.
