Abstract: This study presents quantitative and qualitative assessments of potential consequences of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur countries. It is embedded in a wider Association Agreement and was made public in summer 2019. The focus is on Austria. One objective of the agreement is to liberalise trade and to improve conditions for making in-vestments in order to create jobs and value added and to give consumers in both regions better access to a wide range of products and services. A gravity model analysis shows that average income gains per person are remarkably similar in both regions. However, the economies in Mercosur countries will benefit more than EU Member States economies in relative terms. A second objective of the agreement is to meet targets that go beyond immediate economic benefits, such as to further sustainable development, to prevent environmental deterioration, to avoid social frictions and to smooth adaptation processes. A qualitative comparison shows the advancements compared to other trade agreements and the limitations of trade agreements to address social and environmental concerns. An in depth-appraisal of the provisions for agriculture shows potential benefits and costs for consumers and farmers in both regions. This study contributes to the literature by shedding light on the significance of trade agreements in the context of countries' positions in worldwide trade agreement networks by combining network theory with gravity trade modelling. We illustrate, both numerically and graphically, the evolution of the global web of trade agreements in general, and the network of the European Union specifically, accounting for the geographical and temporal change in the depth of implemented agreements. Gravity estimations for the period 1995-2017 distinguish the direct bilateral effects of trade agreements from indirect effects attributable to the scope of trade networks and countries' positions therein. Abstract: Political debates and economic analyses often focus on single free trade agreements and their potential economic effects on participating trading partners. This study contributes to the literature by shedding light on the significance of trade agreements in the context of countries' positions in worldwide trade agreement networks by combining network theory with gravity trade modelling. We illustrate, both numerically and graphically, the evolution of the global web of trade agreements in general, and the network of the European Union specifically, accounting for the geographical and temporal change in the depth of implemented agreements. Gravity estimations for the period 1995-2017 distinguish the direct bilateral effects of trade agreements from indirect effects attributable to the scope of trade networks and countries' positions therein. Dear colleagues, we cordially invite you to our online research seminar (zoom): *** Wednesday, 9th of September, 2020, 4pm Moritz Schularick (University of Bonn) https://www.moritzschularick.com <https://www.moritzschularick.com/> Modigliani meets Minsky: Inequality, Debt and Financial Fragility in America, 1950-2016 Abstract: This paper studies the secular increase in U.S. household debt and its relation to growing income inequality and financial fragility. We exploit a new household-level dataset that covers the joint distributions of debt, income, and wealth in the United States over the past seven decades. The data show that increased borrowing by middle-class families with low income growth played a central role in rising indebtedness. Debt-to-income ratios have risen most dramatically for households between the 50th and 90th percentiles of the income distribution. While their income growth was low, middle-class families borrowed against the sizable housing wealth gains from rising home prices. Home equity borrowing accounts for about half of the increase in U.S. household debt between the 1970s and 2007. The resulting debt increase made balance sheets more sensitive to income and house price fluctuations and turned the American middle class into the epicenter of growing financial fragility. Workshop Arbeitsmarktökonomie 2020 Termin: 6. November 2020 Ort: IHS – Institut für Höhere Studien – Hörsaal 1080 Wien, Josefstädter Straße 39 Der fünfte Workshop für ArbeitsmarktökonomInnen in Österreich findet heuer am IHS statt. Ziel ist es das Forum zur Diskussion aktueller Forschungsarbeiten mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus der Arbeitsmarktökonomie auszubauen. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte sind Themen des Arbeitsmarktes, der Sozialpolitik, der Einkommensverteilung, sowie verwandter Bereiche, wobei sowohl Makro- als auch Mikroaspekte behandelt werden können. Im Workshop soll eine offene und kollegiale Diskussion stattfinden, auch vorläufige und kontroversielle Arbeiten sind daher willkommen. Es können sowohl Abstracts als auch fertige Papiere eingereicht werden. Bitte senden Sie Vortragsangebote theoretischer und/oder empirischer Natur bis zum 30. September 2020 elektronisch an lmsp(at)ihs.ac.at<mailto:lmsp@ihs.ac.at>. Die Auswahl der Beiträge erfolgt durch die OrganisatorInnen und wird bis Mitte Oktober erfolgen. Angestrebt ist eine Dauer von 20 min je Vortrag mit anschließender Diskussion, wobei sich die OrganisatorenInnen Anpassungen je nach Anzahl der vorliegenden Beiträge vorbehalten. Im Laufe des Oktobers wird das detaillierte Programm bekanntgeben und auch, ob die Veranstaltung physisch am IHS stattfinden kann oder aufgrund des veränderten COVID-19-Geschehens teilweise oder ganz in den virtuellen Raum verlagert werden muss. Die Anmeldung für nicht vortragende InteressentInnen wird ebenfalls ab Mitte Oktober auf der Website möglich sein. Eine diesbezügliche Einladung folgt noch. Google Trends data are also incorporated in investigating whether forecast models with LIKES and/or with Google Trends deliver more accurate forecasts. To capture the dynamics in the data, the autoregressive distributed lag (ADL) model class is employed. Taking into account the daily frequency of the original LIKES data, the mixed data sampling (MIDAS) model class is employed as well. While time-series benchmarks from the naive, error-trend-seasonal, and autoregressive moving average model classes perform best for Graz and Innsbruck across forecast horizons and forecast accuracy measures, ADL models incorporating only LIKES or both LIKES and Google Trends generally outperform their competitors for Salzburg. For Vienna, the MIDAS model including both LIKES and Google Trends produces the smallest forecast accuracy measure values for most forecast horizons.
