Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, das Leben ist oft ungerecht, schon gleich zu Beginn. In welche Familie man hineingeboren wird, prägt in großem Ausmaß künftige Lebens- und Einkommenschancen. Trotz großen persönlichen Engagements verbleiben viele letztlich in der sozioökonomischen Schicht ihrer Eltern. Das bestätigt auch eine aktuelle OECD-Analyse. Sozialer Aufstieg erweist sich also als schwieriges, wenn nicht unmögliches Unterfangen. Warum sozialer Aufstieg hierzulande noch immer so oft misslingt, wie auf der Systemebene „Sprossen in die Aufstiegsleiter eingezogen werden können“ und warum diese politisch auf unebenem Grund steht, wird im Rahmen dieser Veranstaltung von profunden KennerInnen der nationalen und internationalen Forschung zum Thema „soziale Mobilität“ aufgezeigt und diskutiert. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economic Research Seminar (Department Seminar) on Wednesday, May 22, with Ferre De Graeve (KU Leuven) on "Understanding International Long-Term Interest Rate Comovement" Abstract: Long-term interest rates of small open economies correlate strongly with the US long-term rate. Can central banks in those countries decouple from the US? An estimated DSGE model for the UK (vis-`a-vis the US) establishes three structural empirical results. (1) Comovement arises due to nominal fluctuations, not through real rates or term premia. (2) The cause of comovement is the central bank of the small open economy accommodating foreign inflation trends, rather than systematically curbing them. (3) Small open economies may find themselves much more affected by changes in US inflation trends than the US itself. Diamond (1998) and Saez (2001) derive expressions for the optimal taxes that are widely used in public finance. Yet, even in the simplest cases, those do not provide closed-form solutions or a full characterisation for the optimal income tax. The solution is a coupled system of differential equations and has relatively few known characteristics. We derive a new characterisation of the optimum by showing that it satisfies what we call a "fairness principle": taxes at any given level are the average of nearby taxes. This is joint work with Aleh Tsyvinski (Yale). The campaign, successfully led by the populist Swiss People's Party, played aggressively on fears of Muslim immigration and linked Islam with terrorism and violence. We combine an exhaustive violent crime detection dataset with detailed information on crime coverage from 12 newspapers. The data allow us to quantify the extent of pre-vote media bias in the coverage of migrant criminality. We then estimate a theory-based voting equation in the cross-section of municipalities. Exploiting random variations in crime occurrences, we find a first-order, positive effect of news coverage on political support for the minaret ban.
