Stock), Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1090 Wien Abstract: Is it possible to have money without banks or central banks? Can such money have value? Nakamoto (2008) created bitcoin to allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Whether bitcoin has intrinsic, or fundamental, value is a challenging question. To answer it, one must go back to the very definition of money or currency. What is a currency? What is its fundamental value? To what extent can the answers to these questions be extended to bitcoin? To address these issues, we first build a simple economic model to try to clarify what is the value of money and that of cryptocurrencies. In doing so, we rely on standard tools of economics: agents optimise and have rational expectations, prices are set to clear markets, money and cryptocurrencies are used to solve the non-double coincidence of the want problem. This helps us clarify the similarities and differences between standard money and cryptocurrencies. Our next step is to convert this theoretical model to data. To do so we collected a new data set on bitcoin prices and volume and on fundamental variables potentially affecting the value of bitcoin. We then used econometric tools, similar to those used in asset pricing, to estimate the parameters of the model and test it. Dear colleagues, The WU Department of Economics cordially invite you to an ad-hoc Research Seminar in Economics on May 2, with Mauro Ferrante (University of Palermo) on "Measuring concentration in time and space: A novel proposal and empirical applications" Abstract: Many disciplines are concerned with phenomena distributed across time and space. In Economics, as the volume of research within the sphere of the New Economic Geography has increased, concentration, agglomeration and inequality have become familiar themes in the attempt to provide insights in the spatial structure of economies on different spatial scales. From the temporal perspective, seasonality in economic activities has also attracted the attention in the literature, due also to its impacts from the economic, social and environmental perspective. Whilst concentration of economic activities over time and space has been widely investigated in the literature, current measurement approaches do not adequately take into account the well-defined structure of the phenomena investigated from temporal and spatial perspectives. This paper proposes a new measurement approach relating to temporally- and spatially- concentrated phenomena, by introducing a new class of indices based on the transportation problem approach. Deploying accommodation statistics from the Eurostat database, the seasonality of tourism flows across European countries will be analyzed over a ten-year period. In addition, the spatial distribution of selected indicators at NUTS3 levels will be analyzed in order to show compelling features of the proposed approach, not adequately captured by alternative approaches currently adopted. An accurate measurement of concentrated phenomena is required in order to more precisely evaluate the effectiveness of policy actions at the national, regional and sub-regional levels, and to assess the economic, social and environmental impacts of the time and space concentrations of economic activities. Mai 2019, 16:00 Uhr The implications of competition in health, particularly among hospitals, on care quality have been the subject of considerable theoretical and empirical debate. On one hand, economic theory suggests that when prices are regulated, firms compete for consumers on non-price dimensions (i.e. quality), hence quality will be increased in competitive markets. On the other hand, hospital consolidations have been justified by the need to exploit cost advantages (economies of scale) acquired through mergers, and by quality concerns recognising that hospital volume and care quality are related. Hence hospital markets are increasingly concentrated. Based on a study of patient-level data from two years, 2005 and 2012, in order to track changes in market competition and treatment patterns in breast cancer surgery the presentation will question whether, and to what extent, concentration in French hospital markets for cancer care has affected clinical practices and treatment quality. It will introduce the issues around measuring the link between competition and quality and present a novel way of examining quality and competition. Globally, the results suggest that local market competition may be a trigger for hospitals to invest in novel and better quality treatments. Yet, hospital volume remains a significant indicator of quality, therefore benefits of competition versus centralisation appear to be sensitive to the estimates of the impact of volume on outcomes. Furthermore, the findings show that different hospital types have different practice styles and that centralisation of activity have contributed to improving cancer treatment in France. April 2019, 19 Uhr Brötchen und Getränke ab 18:30 Uhr Wo: Institut für Höhere Studien, Hörsaal E02 Josefstädter Straße 39, 1080 Wien Im Rahmen des Pariser Klimaabkommens hat sich die Europäische Union dazu verpflichtet, bis 2020 eine langfristige Dekarbonisierungs-Strategie vorzulegen. Die Europäische Kommission hat dazu im November 2018 erste Vorschläge in Form von verschiedenen Szenarien vorgelegt. Sie favorisiert dabei Pfade, die zu Netto-Emissionsminderungen von 100% bis 2050 führen sollen - also zu einem rechnerisch "treibhausgasneutralen" Europa. Die Entscheidung über die neue Strategie aber liegt letztlich bei den Mitgliedstaaten per Konsensbeschluss der Staats- und Regierungschefs im Europäischen Rat. Die Veranstaltung wird sich der Frage widmen, ob es realistisch ist, dass der Europäische Rat das bisherige Ambitionsniveau von 80-95% bis 2050 tatsächlich steigert und welche Bedeutung die Entscheidung über eine neue EU-Klimastrategie für die Mitgliedstaaten hat, insbesondere für Österreich und Deutschland.
