Kenney (University of California, Davis) The Platform Economy: Reorganising Capitalism Abstract: Digital platform firms led by Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft are changing social life, work, competition and, ultimately, value creation and capture. Today, the five US giants plus Alibaba and Tencent are the most valuable firms in the world. The increasing centrality of digital platforms for organising competition, work, and value creation is changing the balance of power between labour and employer and within a variety of supply chains. Not only do we have the salient cases of work contracting platforms such as Upwork and services platforms such as Uber and Lyft, but also there are new opportunities for generating income such as the Airbnb, app stores, YouTube, and beyond. Remarkably, even when workers are not displaced, platforms such as Yelp and TripAdvisor affect the work and management process. Digital platforms are also transforming the dynamics of competition in a wide variety of industries from services, logistics and finance through entertainment and music. I explore these dynamics and speculate how inter-firm competition might be impacted particularly as the platform giants become increasingly intertwined in all social and economic life and can leverage their existing power to enter yet other value-creation opportunities. Da dies für die Mitglieder der Nationalökonomische Gesellschaft interessant sein könnte. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, am 03. Mai 2018 findet der erste Faculty Science Day statt. Ziel dieses Events ist die Präsentation der Forschungsleistung unserer Fakultätsmitglieder, sowie ein reger Austausch innerhalb der Fakultät. Wir sind sehr erfreut, dass wir Prof. Hans Baumgartner (Penn State University und Mitglied des Scientific Advisory Boards) für einen Keynote-Vortrag zum Thema Misresponse to Survey Questions gewinnen konnten. Dieser wird den Auftakt des Faculty Science Days darstellen. Anschließend werden einige Fakultätsmitglieder kurze Vorträge zu aktuellen Forschungsthemen einbringen. Den Nachmittag werden unsere jungen WissenschafterInnen in Form von einer Poster Session gestalten, die zuletzt bei der Evaluierung vergangenes Jahr große Zustimmung fand. Much of the empirical literature to date suggests that there is generally a positive relationship between globalization and women's labor market outcomes, but this finding depends on country, time frame, and exact outcome measured. Along with these open empirical questions, perhaps the most important shortcoming in the literature is the omission of an analysis of the mechanisms through which globalization could affect gender equality. Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren! wir laden Sie herzlich zur nächsten Veranstaltung des Vienna Behavioral Economics Network am 25. April 2018 ein. Dort wird der Verhaltensökonom Bertil Tungodden zum Thema Welfare State, Responsibility, and Fairness vortragen. Tungodden ist einer der führenden Verhaltensökonomen Skandinaviens. Er ist Professor am Department of Economics der Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), und ebendort auch Co-Direktor der Forschungsgruppe <https://www.nhh.no/en/research-centres/fair/> The Choice Lab. Er forscht zu Entwicklungsökonomie, Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und Sozialwahltheorie. Tungodden hat zahlreiche bedeutende Beiträge in internationalen Fachzeitschriften in den Bereichen Wirtschaft und Philosophie veröffentlicht. Im Anschluss an die Keynote diskutieren Martina Tiwald und Petr Beko Baxant mit Tungodden und dem Publikum zum Thema. Tiwald, 23, ist Vorsitzende der Österreichischen Bundesjugendvertretung (BJV). Investment Accelerations: The Role of the Real Exchange Rate Among Other Factors, 19 April 2018

ARSLAN RAZMI University of Massachusetts at Amherst THURSDAY, 19 APRIL 2018, 4:00 PM (16:00 CEST) wiiw, Rahlgasse 3, 1060 Vienna Existing empirical studies have mainly focused on determinants of average investment levels. We investigate instead episodes of accelerated capital stock growth that last eight years or longer. We find that episodes are relatively common, even in low growth regions, but more so in middle income and Asian countries. After identifying 175 such episodes between 1950-2014, we employ probit analysis to explore their characteristics. Turning points in investment tend to be preceded by undervalued real exchange rates, macroeconomic stability, and net capital outflows (especially portfolio outflows). We also find strong evidence for a negative correlation with the capital to output ratio and per capita GDP, and a positive correlation with a human capital index. It has the potential to improve the design and implementation of fiscal policy, but it also creates new challenges. The analytical chapter of the IMF’s April 2018 Fiscal Monitor [http://www.imf.org/en/Publications/FM/Issues/2018/04/06/fiscal-monitor-apri…] first analyzes improvements in policy implementation with illustrative examples on tax compliance and spending efficiency. The analysis suggests that adopting digital tools could increase indirect tax collection at the border by up to 2 percent of GDP per year. In the future, digitalization could also help governments track down taxes on wealth sheltered in offshore financial centers, estimated at 10 percent of world GDP. On the spending side, country case studies show how digitalization can play a role in improving social protection and the delivery of public services.
