Completing the banking union is decisive for containing the centrifugal forces in the euro area and much has been accomplished so far. A banking union, in its current design, is a remedy to weaken the sovereign-bank nexus, but does little to alleviate the destabilising features stemming from the ‘shadow-fiscal nexus’: Since government bonds are the most important collateral in market-based finance in Europe, the fortune of sovereigns hinges, via the repo market, on the pro-cyclical shadow-banking activities of large banks, potentially leading to flight-to-safety and self-fulfilling crises. The most effective cure would be pooling sovereignty via euro bonds, or, given the reluctance for risk-sharing, introducing European Safe Bonds (ESBies) that work without mutualisation of debt. Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, untenstehend eine Diskussionsveranstaltung zum Inhalt und der Rolle von VW-Einführungslehrbüchern wie sie auch hier im Haus verwendet werden – zu der ich Sie/euch alle gern einladen würde! Ort und Zeitpunkt: WU Wien, Festsaal 1; 14.06. - 18:30Uhr Viele Grüße, Hendrik Theine ---- Gibts nicht. Hamma ned. - Was die Lehrbuchökonomie (nicht) kennt Wer kennt sie nicht, die massiven roten Einführungslehrbücher? Generationen von Studierenden haben durch sie die Grundlagen der VWL kennengelernt. Sie sind damit ein wichtiger Teil der heutigen ökonomischen (Aus)Bildung an den Hochschulen der ganzen Welt: die Einführungslehrbücher der VWL, Mikro oder Makro von Mankiw, Pindyck oder Blanchard. Die Diskussionsveranstaltung erörtert die Wichtigkeit von Lehrbüchern im Ökonomiestudium und geht der Frage nach, welche ökonomischen Konzepte in Lehrbüchern vermittelt werden. Damit wirft sie gleichzeitig jedoch auch einen kritischen Blick darauf, welche Inhalte und empirischen Erkenntnisse gerade nicht angesprochen werden, und wo dadurch etwa “blinde Flecken” in der Bildung von Studierenden der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften entstehen. Die Veranstaltung ist wie folgt aufgebaut: Zunächst wird uns Janina Urban, Mitherausgeberin des Buches „Wirtschaft neu denken: Blinde Flecken der Lehrbuchökonomie“ sowie Referentin für neues ökonomisches Denken am Forschungsinstitut für gesellschaftliche Weiterentwicklung einen Vortrag zu eben diesen blinden Flecken und ihrem Buch geben. Anschließende wird es eine Diskussion mit folgenden TeilnehmerInnen geben: Alfred Stiassny (ao. We use a 2005 increase in the deposit insurance limit in Canada from 60,000 CAD to 100,000 CAD, along with detailed information on the holdings of insured and uninsured deposits at the household level. An increase in deposit insurance represents an exogenous shift towards safe assets in households’ portfolios, as a larger share of deposits becomes fully insured. We document that banks consequently adjust rates on large deposits and that households respond by shifting parts of their portfolios towards riskier assets outside the banking system. This is consistent with households attempting to maintain a constant allocation between safe and risky assets, as suggested by standard asset pricing models. Overall, we estimate that about 2.7 percent of all outstanding deposits in Canada were moved to risky assets outside the banking system following the limit change.
