Abstract This paper examines the relationship between wealth inequality and ethnic conflict in the German regions of Czechoslovakia (the so-called Sudetenland) during the interwar period. We utilise unique data on wealth inequality at the county level, along with measures of political preferences and social cleavages from parliamentary elections. We demonstrate that high wealth inequality correlated with increased vote shares for German nationalists. To address possible endogeneity concerns, we employ an instrumental variable approach based on the pre-WWI significance of land in the wealth portfolio across the wealth distribution. We interpret the results within the framework of two-issue political competition where class and ethnic divisions intersect. We hypothesise that the wealthy elites supported nationalists to counter socialist demands. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, April 30th, with Fanny Valli (University of Konstanz) on "How Anti-Immigration Votes Impact Cultural Assimilation" Abstract: Immigration remains a contentious issue worldwide, often sparking debates about cultural integration and social cohesion. This study investigates how anti-immigration policies influence the cultural assimilation of immigrant populations, focusing on the 2014 Swiss popular initiative "Against Mass Immigration." Approved by 50.3% of voters, the initiative symbolized public hostility toward immigration and imposed employment restrictions favoring Swiss residents. Using birth registry data and machine learning techniques, we analyze naming patterns as indicators of cultural assimilation. A difference-in-differences design compares naming trends in immigrant and native families before and after the initiative, isolating the effects of the increased perceived discrimination. Complementary measures, including intermarriage rates and naturalizations, provide a comprehensive view of assimilation behaviors. Results contribute to debates on whether discrimination fosters assimilation or reinforces ethnic identity, offering insights into the impact of public opinion on immigrant integration. But where exactly does the future manifest in daily life? How can we recognize and evaluate its impact on both short-term decisions and long-term projects? Building on the theoretical framework developed in Futures in Action (Sociology, 2023), this presentation explores the role of expectations, imaginaries, and future narratives in decision-making under uncertainty. Concrete examples from the field of fertility choices will be presented, analyzing how economic, social, and environmental factors shape individuals' intentions to have children. Using survey and experimental data, the presentation examines how different representations of the future influence both individual and collective decisions. About the presenter: Giacomo Bazzani is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Florence. His research interests include future and agency, prosocial behavior, and sustainability transitions. His contributions have been published in journals such as Sociology, Theory and Society, Sociological Forum, Acta Sociologica, and European Journal of Population. *CfP: UATX Winter Institute for the History and Philosophy of Economics* The first *University of Austin (UATX) Winter Institute for the History and Philosophy of Economics* will be held at UATX’s Downtown Austin (Texas) campus, Thursday, December 18th, through Sunday, December 21st, 2025. The Winter Institute has been conceived as a small (hopefully) annual conference following the tradition laid down by Sandra Peart and David Levy in their long-running Summer Institute for the Preservation of the History of Economic Thought, and subsequently carried on for two years as a Winter Institute, by Ross Emmett at Arizona State University. The purpose of the Institute is to provide a workshop setting, no less academically demanding for all its collegiality, in which both early-career and advanced scholars can engage with each other’s work in a constructive, yet rigorously critical, manner. The Institute will offer a forum for historians and philosophers of economics to meet, network, and present their works-in-progress to an audience of engaged peers. One aspect of the Peart / Levy / Emmett model that we are especially concerned to preserve is *a commitment to early-career scholars. We are reserving five of the ten available presentation slots for graduate students and scholars who have completed their PhDs within the last two years*. The other five presentation slots are reserved for more established senior scholars. We will also support a number of invited scholars who will participate in the Institute as attendees / discussants, without presenting a paper. Naturally, anyone who might be near Austin at the time and would like to attend the Institute without financial support is welcome. The Vienna Circle and the Austrian School have shaped the development of philosophical, scientific, and political debate in the 20th century. In the 21st century, logical empiricism has undergone extensive re-evaluation, while the Austrian School experiences another revival. Yet, despite numerous connections and interactions between the two movements, their relationship has captured surprisingly sparse attention in the historical and philosophical literature. If an account is provided at all, logical empiricists and Austrian economists are portrayed as philosophically, scientifically, and politically antithetical groups. Among the most frequently mentioned contrastive pairs of catchwords are empiricism vs apriorism, formal methods vs verbal reasoning, and socialism vs classical liberalism. Acknowledging the existence of disagreements between logical empiricism and the Austrian School, recent scholarship has challenged the received view of antithetical opposition by reconstructing hitherto neglected compatibilities and similarities between the two movements. This workshop aims to advance historical as well as systematic discussions on the relationship between logical empiricism and Austrian economics. Einreichungen für den Kurt-Rothschild-Preis 2025 sind möglich bis Dienstag, 22. Vollständige Einreichungen bestehen aus einer Kombination von wissenschaftlichen Publikation(en) und Veröffentlichungen, die an eine breite mediale Öffentlichkeit adressiert sind. Dabei ist wesentlich, dass beide Kriterien wissenschaftliche Basis und publizistische Verwertung der wissenschaftlichen Inhalte gleichzeitig gegeben und nachgewiesen sind.
