Einladung zur Podiumsdiskussion im Rahmen der 8. ATHEA Konferenz “Was kann die Gesundheitsökonomie für die Gesellschaft leisten, und welche Datenzugänge braucht sie dafür?” 06. März 2025 um 16:30 Uhr am Institut für Höhere Studien (IHS) Im Rahmen der ersten ATHEA-Konferenz vor zehn Jahren wurde auf dem Podium die Frage diskutiert: „Was kann die Gesundheitsökonomie für die Gesellschaft leisten?“. Seither haben die ATHEA-Konferenzen gezeigt, wie vielfältig in und über Österreich geforscht wird. Ein Großteil der Forschung benötigt jedoch Daten, und der Zugang zu diesen ist in Österreich nicht immer einfach. Dear colleagues, Please find attached the call for papers for the final WeLaR conference, which will take place in June 2025. The event is planned to be held in person in Brussels. We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker will be Professor Francesco Vona, a full Professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Milan. His research encompasses a range of topics, including the labour market and innovation impacts of climate policies, the economics of a just energy transition, and measuring green production, jobs and skills. We warmly encourage contributions from PhD students and early-career academics. A poster session will be organised, with a prize awarded to the best presentation. Abstract: Health Expectancy (HE) indicators become increasingly important for health policies and public health measures. The general understanding of HE is that it simply extends the average life expectancy (LE) by one dimension. Technically, this is correct because the years lived by the life table population-the basis of LE-is divided into two quality dimensions: life years spent in good health and those spent in poor health. However, incorporating this additional dimension to the life table makes the HE indicators highly sensitive to various measurement and estimation issues. Their impact on levels and trends in HE can be huge, but is largely ignored in practical application. The talk presents selected examples from the research of the ERC project LETHE that demonstrate the HE sensitivity and discusses the usefulness of the indicator as well as possible ways to reduce its weaknesses. About the presenter: Marc Luy is Director of the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Honorary Professor of Demography at the University of Vienna. His research is on trends and differentials in health and mortality. In particular, he wants to better understand the causal mechanisms that enable some (groups of) people to live longer and healthier than others. His best-known research project is the German-Austrian Cloister Study on the health and longevity of Catholic order members. The global goal of cutting the extreme poverty rate to 3 percent by 2030 had slipped out of reach. A new World Bank's report, "Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet", identifies overlapping crises and gives governments a comprehensive framework to monitor progress, identify new pathways to success, and choose the right policy priorities. In the transition to climate neutrality, biomass has long played an important but controversially discussed role. In recent years, the strong progress in biotechnological and biochemical process development has re-inspired the focus on biomass and its potential for replacing fossil carbon in a broad spectrum of applications including fuels, chemicals, power, and heat. Designing viable and resilient solutions to the multi-faceted sustainability challenges will have to be based on a sound scientific understanding of transformation pathways, which are at the same time (a) desirable (from a sustainability perspective), (b) feasible (from a techno-economic perspective), and (c) acceptable (from a stakeholder consensus perspective). At the same time, recent developments have shown vividly that socio-economic dynamics and (sometimes unexpected) external events can have a decisive impact on the diffusion of products and technologies, which have to be considered in system-analytical approaches. Robust scientific approaches are thus needed, integrating research across disciplinary boundaries into a comprehensive systems analysis of the bioeconomy transformation. She holds a degree in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard University and earned her PhD at Leibniz University Hannover, focusing on innovation management in complex systems. From 2009 to 2014, she was a senior researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research before joining the Systems Analysis research division at ICE in 2014. Her current research focuses on the analysis of sustainable transformation processes and their resource implications.
