Abstract Genetic endowments are fixed at conception, and they remain constant over the life course of individuals. Therefore, genetic inequality contradicts the widespread goal of providing equal educational opportunities to all members of society. In line with this policy goal, there is a long-standing literature in economics, sociology, and psychology that poses “the question of how well schools reduce the inequity of birth” (Coleman et al., 1966, p.36). In this paper, we investigate the question of how well schools address inequalities based on genetic disadvantages by providing the first causal study to estimate the interaction between genetic endowments and school quality. To this end, we combine Norwegian data on genetic trios (mothers, fathers, fathers) with validated measures of school value-added. Abstract: Declining fertility has prompted growing attention to unrealized fertility, when people have fewer children than they desire. This study interrogates the meaning and measurement of unrealized fertility by comparing the goals of straight/cisgender and sexual and gender minorities (SGM), a group that experiences significant barriers to pregnancy and parenthood. Drawing from cognitive interviews with 31 U.S. adults, I analyze participant responses to survey questions about their fertility ideals and intentions, paying particular attention to moments of uncertainty and contradiction and perceived barriers to childbearing. Relative to straight/cisgender participants, SGMs were more often ambivalent in their fertility ideals and, when they desired a(nother) child, were less likely to intend to have one. Findings offer insight into the survey measurement of unrealized fertility; because fertility constraints impact goals (not just outcomes), more comprehensive measurement is needed. About the presenter: Kathleen Broussard is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining the faculty at USC, she received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. Her core research agenda describes the social determinants of reproductive health desires, behaviors, and experiences. Abstract: This paper investigates the role of firm heterogeneity in environmentally extended new trade models, contrasting Eaton-Kortum and Melitz models to Armington and Krugman models. We show that when emissions per sales are constant across firms - a standard assumption in the literature - all four models predict identical emission responses. However, when emissions per quantity are constant across firms, this equivalence breaks. We propose a generalized framework that nests both assumptions. Calibrating the model with multiple industries and estimating the key elasticity between emission intensity and productivity using German firm-level data, we find that firm heterogeneity considerably raises emissions from trade liberalization. Call for Abstracts Eighth ATHEA Conference for Health Economics “Status quo and new directions for Austrian health economics” Vienna, March 6th and 7th 2025 A decade ago, the first ATHEA conference on health economics, “The Breadth of Health Economics”, was held. This marked the beginning of a series of conferences that fostered closer collaborations between health economists from Austria and beyond. In commemoration of this milestone, the upcoming conference will once again serve as a platform to present and reflect on the progress made in Austrian health economics while facilitating a discourse on its critical appraisal and future directions. To this end, we invite all researchers in the field of health economics to submit their latest, cutting-edge research for discussion with their peers. As part of the conference, ATHEA will also organise a panel discussion to debate current and future challenges of data access for research in Austria and Europe. The panel will consist of researchers, data holders, and experts on data privacy law. As in previous years, submissions for presentation are welcome in all fields of health economics and health policy, including long-term care, and are not restricted to the conference topic. Abstract While previous research has shown that disadvantaged young people are less likely to work in professional occupations than their advantaged peers, even conditional on their education, until now little has been known about the reasons for this - are they applying for professional entry-level roles and not being hired, or are they not applying in the first place? Using unique recruitment data from 17 large employers' graduate programmes, we are able to answer this question for the first time. We find that applicants from lower SEB groups and ethnic minority groups are well represented among the applicant pool, but disproportionately do not receive job offers, even when considering applicants with similar prior attainment and other demographic characteristics applying to similar roles. Around half of the gap in job offers between working class and professional background applicants appears during the application sift and online test phase of the process. The other half of the gap in offers emerges at the face-to-face stages. For ethnic minority groups, the majority of the gap in offer rates emerges at the application sift and online test phase, rather than at the face-to-face stage. Women are typically underrepresented in the applicant pool across entry routes but are more likely to achieve a job offer than otherwise similar men, among those who do apply. Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Wednesday, November 6th, with Francesco Ferlenga (University of Warwick) on "Immigrant Enfranchisement and Integration: Evidence from Italy" Abstract: We study the consequences of immigrant enfranchisement by exploiting Romania's accession to the EU in 2007, which granted municipal election voting rights to Romanian immigrants in Italy. We conduct an event-study analysis at the municipality-by-year level and reach three key findings. First, we find that the enfranchisement of Romanian immigrants leads to an increase in the likelihood of electing a Romanian-born councilor in municipal elections, with higher increases for municipalities expecting a competitive election. Using an instrumented difference-in-differences approach, we find the increase in representation is driven by enfranchisement of the preexisting population and not by new Romanian arrivals following the accession. Second, we find that social capital among Romanian immigrants increases after 2007, indicating that the effect of enfranchisement extends beyond political representation to integration. However, despite the increase in representation and social capital, we find that immigrant presence increases the likelihood of a right-leaning party victory, raises municipal spending on public security, and lowers spending on social programs. This suggests that natives' backlash against immigrant presence plays a bigger role in determining the winning party than the existence of a newly enfranchised immigrant community.
