Trump hat im Falle seiner Wiederwahl erhebliche Zollerhöhungen auf US-Importe im Allgemeinen und speziell gegen China angekündigt. Solche Maßnahmen könnten das globale Handelssystem weiter destabilisieren und hätten unmittelbare negative Auswirkungen auf die Einkommen in den Exportmärkten wie der EU und China. Die Berechnungen von Robert Stehrer (wiiw) und Oliver Reiter (wiiw) anhand eines multisektoralen Gleichgewichtsmodells zeigen jedoch, dass die Folgen für die USA selbst noch gravierender wären. As a highlight, we are planning a round table with 5 participants on the topic: "Reproductive futures: Shifting the boundaries of late fertility? How will technology change reproduction? Should we be concerned about the consequences of very late and increasingly medicalised reproduction? We would also like to point out that it is possible to join the conference online. *Final Call for Abstracts:* *Workshop I: Adverse Allies: Logical Empiricism and Austrian EconomicsThe FWF ESPRIT research project “Adverse Allies: Logical Empiricism and Austrian Economics”, the Institute of Philosophy and Scientific Method (JKU Linz), the Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna), and the Vienna Circle Society host two workshops in 2025. The organizers seek submissions for contributed talks for the first workshop now.* Acknowledging the existence of disagreements between logical empiricism and the Austrian School, recent scholarship has challenged the received view of antithetical opposition by reconstructing hitherto neglected compatibilities and similarities between the two movements. Many have set ambitious deadlines for themselves: reach high-income status within the next two or three decades. That will not be easy. Since the 1990s, only 34 middle-income economies have succeeded in that feat. The rest — 108 at the end of 2023 — have been stuck in “the middle-income trap”. Since 1970, the median income per capita of middle-income countries has never risen above 10 percent of the US level. Climbing to high-income status in today’s environment will be harder still — because of high debt and aging populations in developing countries and growing protectionism in advanced economies. The World Development Report 2024<https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/bitstreams/8dca4aff-e0f5-4865-b245-ec9c…> outlines how all developing economies can avoid the middle-income trap. Lower-middle-income countries must go beyond investment-driven strategies — they must also adopt modern technologies and successful business practices from abroad and infuse them across their economies. Upper-middle-income countries need to accelerate the shift to innovation, by pushing the global frontiers of technology. This requires reconfiguring economic structures governing enterprises, labor, and energy use — in ways that enable greater economic freedom, social mobility, and political contestability. Somik V. Lall, Senior Adviser to the World Bank Group Chief Economist and Coordinator of the World Development Report 2024, will present key findings from this year’s report at the BMF. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, which will reflect on the role of innovation for development, as well as the implications of past success stories for current middle-income economies, e.g. in Eastern and South-eastern Europe. Abstract Apprenticeships play a key role in enabling successful school-to-work transitions in many countries but, in the presence of imperfect information, the specificity of this type of training may entail important costs for those working outside their training fields. I study this issue in one of the most prominent training settings, the German apprenticeship system. Using administrative data and a broad occupational classification, I find that 40% of individuals work in occupations different from their training. I estimate the cost of mismatch using vacancy instruments and extend methodological approaches in high-dimensional selection settings. Lacking training in one’s occupation entails an average wage penalty of 14%, the equivalent of two years of work experience. The penalty increases with the task distance between training and occupation. My findings suggest that retraining is crucial to mitigate the adverse consequences from imperfect information in specialized training settings. However, this kind of reforms may lead to substantial transfers from those with shorter lifespans to those that will live longer than the average, as they do not necessarily take into account the socio-economic differences in mortality. The contribution of our paper is therefore twofold. Firstly, we illustrate how both a Defined Benefit and a Notional Defined Contribution pay-as-you-go scheme can put the lower social economic classes at a disadvantage, when compared to the actuarially fair pensions. In contrast to that, higher classes experience a gain. This is due to the fact that mortality rates per socio-economic class are not considered by either scheme. Consequently, we propose a model that determines the parameters for each scheme and class which would render the pensions fairer even when no socio-economic mortality differences are considered.
