This year's conference theme is “Monetary policy trade-offs in a heterogeneous currency area”. Monetary policy in a heterogeneous currency area faces inherent trade-offs because differences across countries, regions, sectors and groups shape both how shocks are transmitted and how effectively policy works. A single monetary policy action – such as adjusting interest rates – affects agents differently, stabilising prices and output for some, while potentially increasing risks to output, employment or financial stability for others. These variations generate multiple trade-offs: When pursuing disinflation, policymakers may need to balance the goal of lowering inflation with potential costs across sectors and regions. Conversely, a single expansionary monetary policy aimed at avoiding below-target inflation at the aggregate level may perpetuate inflation or create financial imbalances in some sectors, regions or countries. The tools available to central banks – policy rates, balance sheet operations and communication – are limited and cannot address all these trade-offs on their own. Complementary fiscal and macroprudential policies are essential in supporting the overall economy and managing sectoral or regional disparities. A clear understanding of heterogeneity within the monetary union is crucial for calibrating macroeconomic policies that support economies operating near potential, sustain inflation close to target and mitigate the risk of creating or worsening financial or economic vulnerabilities. This conference seeks to deepen our understanding of how heterogeneity shapes monetary policy trade-offs and how fiscal and macroprudential policies can complement efforts to achieve better outcomes. Bringing together policymakers, academics and financial industry experts, it aims to foster an exchange of ideas at the intersection of policy practice and academic research. The programme combines policy-oriented discussions designed to stimulate dialogue and analytical exchange with academic sessions dedicated to presenting and critically assessing new research. Abstract We use population-wide Norwegian administrative data to construct a multidimensional measure of dynastic social capital—elite education, occupational prestige, organizational and corporate leadership, and residence in high-price neighborhoods—and examine how it is transmitted across generations. Social capital is strongly persistent across generations and strongly predicts children’s long-run earnings and access to elite positions, even after conditioning on parental income, education, and cognitive ability. Incorporating social capital into standard mobility regressions reduces estimated income-based persistence by more than half, indicating that a substantial share of intergenerational inequality reflects inherited social positions rather than financial resources alone. The influence of social capital grows over the life cycle and has a particularly large effect on becoming a top earner. Quasi-experimental evidence from adoption placements and parental lottery wins shows that these patterns reflect environmental transmission rather than genetic inheritance or direct income effects. Together, the findings reframe intergenerational mobility as a process shaped not only by inherited resources and skills, but also by durable social positions transmitted across generations. Inferential Naivety in English Auctions with Interdependent Values". Abstract: With interdependent values, English auctions can aggregate dispersed information as active bidders infer their rivals’ signals from observed dropouts, thus mitigating the winner’s curse. I study what happens when bidders do worry about the winner’s curse, but wrongly believe that rivals bid solely based on their private information, neglecting that their exits also embed information from earlier dropouts. This inferential naivety creates a winner’s blessing: bidders under-infer from dropout prices, bid too cautiously, and the winner pays less than under correct inference. With independent signals, this breaks revenue equivalence. Under affiliation, inferential naivety can overturn the linkage principle. Abstract We construct a global metal price uncertainty index and examine its effects on economic activity and stock markets at the global level as well as for the euro area and the United States. Our analysis focuses on industrial metals - copper, aluminum, nickel, zinc, and lead - as included in the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index. To characterize price developments, we employ spot and futures prices of these metals traded at the London Metal Exchange. Methodologically, we extend the framework of Jurado, Ludvigson and Ng (2015) to construct the metal price uncertainty index. We then conduct a range of empirical analyses, including impulse response and forecasting exercises, allowing for regime-dependent dynamics conditional on periods of high and low metal price uncertainty. We find that metal price uncertainty helps to improve forecasting. In addition, we observe that threshold VAR models are often the best models with respect to forecast accuracy when compared to linear and benchmark models. In the impulse response analysis with threshold VAR models we see different responses (of industrial production, the stock market, etc.) in high uncertainty and low uncertainty regimes to shocks in metal price uncertainty. For example, a shock in metal price uncertainty has a significantly stronger negative effect in the high uncertainty regime than in the low uncertainty regime. Abstract: This paper develops a dynamic spatial equilibrium model of a multi-region, multi-sector open economy where heterogeneous agents optimally choose their job, making forward-looking decisions under aggregate uncertainty. We propose a solution of the system of individual dynamic optimal-control problems under rational expectations as a Mean Field Game, in discrete time and state space, preserving the full nonlinear structure of the problem. Using a calibration for France, we demonstrate that welfare outcomes and the spatial distribution of labor differ systematically from those under perfect foresight.
