Abstract In autumn 2025, the Swedish Government's Productivity Commission submitted its final report on how Sweden can once again become one of the countries with the highest productivity growth in the world, after a couple of decades of somewhat weaker performance. In this presentation, Lars Persson, one of the members of the Swedish Productivity Commission, presents the Commission's main conclusions. A central assessment was that Sweden fundamentally has strong conditions for robust productivity growth. Well-functioning institutions, efficiency-oriented norms, and competitive markets create pressure for structural transformation and incentives for entrepreneurship, education, work, investment, and infrastructure development. These factors are important explanations for the Commission's positive overall assessment. At the same time, in a rapidly changing global environment, there is significant scope for improvement. The Commission therefore proposed a number of reforms that, from a socioeconomic perspective, are expected to strengthen productivity. An important starting point is that reforms should be aimed at addressing fundamental market and regulatory failures. The presentation will focus, among other things, on institutions and reforms that promote entrepreneurship, creative destruction, better coordination among public authorities, and greater long-termism in infrastructure investment, for example in electricity supply. We develop and estimate a cross-sectional units vector autoregression (csuVAR) that combines aggregate variables with unit-level outcomes, earnings in our application. The csuVAR also allows us to reconstruct the cross-sectional distribution from the unit-level outcomes. We contrast the csuVAR with a functional VAR model (fVAR) that is designed to directly track the evolution of macroeconomic aggregates and a cross-sectional distribution, but not individual units. In an empirical application we examine the effect of productivity shocks on the unit-level labor earnings dynamics in Germany, using a panel data set constructed from the Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB) published by Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the German Federal Employment Agency. Die Schweiz und Österreich ähneln sich in vielerlei Hinsicht: Beide sind rohstoffarme Binnenstaaten, deren hoher Wohlstand nur durch hohe Produktivität gesichert werden kann. Es gibt aber auch wesentliche Unterschiede: Die Schweiz ist essentiell direktdemokratisch organisiert und stärker föderalisiert als Österreich, strukturell mehrsprachig, nicht Mitglied in der Europäischen Union und verfügt mit dem Schweizer Franken über eine eigene Währung. Vielen gilt die Schweiz mit hohen Einkommen, geringer Staatsverschuldung und tiefer Arbeitslosenquote als wirtschaftliches Vorbild, was auch durch die starke Wirtschaftsmigration in die Schweiz zum Ausdruck kommt. Aufbauend auf einem Vergleich der makroökonomischen Situation zwischen Österreich und der Schweiz und einem Vortrag, der wesentliche Aspekte der politökonomischen Situation der Schweiz ausleuchtet, werden wir eingehend diskutieren, was Österreich von der Schweiz lernen kann, was die Schweiz von Österreich und was vielleicht beide von globalen Best-Performern lernen könnten. Abstract: We embed an experiment in a large-scale representative survey to investigate how relative wealth affects risk-taking and how this effect varies as a function of perceived control over life outcomes. Our results contest the common prediction of higher risk-taking in the middle of the distribution. Instead, we find that respondents who are induced to perceive their relative wealth as low display more tolerance towards risk in a subsequent incentivized risk-taking task. Co-Authors: Eppie van Egeraat and Alexander Willen Date and Time: Monday, June 1; 3.00 p.m. Location: WU Vienna, D4.0.127<https://campus.wu.ac.at/?q=D4.0.127>. Abstract We use population-wide Norwegian administrative data to construct a multidimensional measure of dynastic social capital—elite education, occupational prestige, organizational and corporate leadership, and residence in high-price neighborhoods—and examine how it is transmitted across generations. Social capital is strongly persistent across generations and strongly predicts children’s long-run earnings and access to elite positions, even after conditioning on parental income, education, and cognitive ability. Incorporating social capital into standard mobility regressions reduces estimated income-based persistence by more than half, indicating that a substantial share of intergenerational inequality reflects inherited social positions rather than financial resources alone. The influence of social capital grows over the life cycle and has a particularly large effect on becoming a top earner. Quasi-experimental evidence from adoption placements and parental lottery wins shows that these patterns reflect environmental transmission rather than genetic inheritance or direct income effects. Together, the findings reframe intergenerational mobility as a process shaped not only by inherited resources and skills, but also by durable social positions transmitted across generations. DA green 04 (Freihaus Building, 4th floor, green area) Alena Wabitsch (WU) https://www.alenawabitsch.eu/ "Incentivizing Inflation Expectations" (co-authored with Sergii Drobot, Daniela Puzzello and Ryan Rholes) Accurate inflation expectations are central to economic modeling and policy. Yet major surveys elicit them without performance-based marginal incentives, despite their well-established importance to belief data quality in experimental economics. We show that marginal incentives raise effort and fundamentally reshape reported inflation expectations: lowering upward bias by 3.4 percentage points, reducing disagreement by one-third, closing the gender gap, and tripling learning rates in an RCT. Incentivized expectations are more consistent and better predict spending. Calibrating a simple New Keynesian model, we demonstrate that these differences matter: marginal incentives sharpen empirical inference and improve policy guidance - without increasing participant remuneration.
