Abstract: While mobile phone data constitute a promising new data source for granular population statistics, they remain partial in terms of population coverage, and prone to representation biases which are difficult to measure and correct for in the absence of independent auxiliary data. The use of mobile phone data to estimate changes of sub-regional population counts over time often relies on a series of assumptions (e.g. the assumption that movements observable for mobile phone users are similar to the movements of the general population. Mobile phone users differ from the general population in many (socio-demographic) characteristics. Flowminder has developed and applied a methodology to produce estimates of internal migration and sub-regional population change in Ghana, Haiti and the DRC. These dynamic population estimates can be used for a wide range of use cases, from the health sector, humanitarian work, disaster preparedness to official statistics. About the presenter: Roland Hosner is a sociologist, migration researcher and statistician, currently working on the estimation of internal mobility and bias-adjustment of statistics derived from mobile phone data. While we see a new generation of digital technologies emerging, productivity has not responded as yet. In fact, over the past two decades average productivity growth for advanced economies has slowed to the lowest rate since World War 2. It feels as if we are reliving the productivity paradox of the 1980s, when Nobel prize winner Robert Solow famously stated: “we see computers everywhere except in the productivity statistics”. So maybe we should just be a bit more patient for the broad-based productivity effects of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to appear. However, despite the hype there is no guarantee that we will see productivity growth trajectory strengthening once again. Technological change needs to be embedded in a conducive economic, political and social environment to translate into widespread innovation and productivity growth, that is, into a more efficient way of transforming resources to create better outcomes. A new productivity narrative is needed that focuses on how it can support inclusive and sustainable growth. *In his talk, Professor Bart van Ark, will discuss* • Why does productivity matter, historically and today? Can we still measure it well? • Why has productivity growth slowed? What has it meant for people, firms and places? • How to revive productivity growth? Dear all, we kindly invite you to our next ECON Theory and Policy Seminar Talk on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 4:00-5:30 pm (TU Wien, Freihaus Building, FH HS4 – 2nd floor, yellow area) Natacha Raffin (https://ens-paris-saclay.fr/en/actualite/combining-economy-and-environment-…) "Postponement, career development and fertility rebound" We use an overlapping generations setup with two reproductive periods to explore how fertility decisions may differ in response to economic incentives in early and late adulthood. In particular, we analyze the interplay between fertility choices---related to career opportunities ---and wages, and investigate the role played by late fertility. We show that young adults only postpone parenthood above a certain wage threshold and that late fertility increases with investment in human capital. The long run trend is either to a low productivity equilibrium, involving high early fertility, no investment in human capital and relatively low income, or to a high productivity equilibrium, where households postpone parenthood to invest in their human capital, with higher late fertility and higher levels of income. A convergence to the latter state would explain the postponement of parenthood and the fertility rebound observed in Europe in recent decades. Call for Papers: 13th Young Economists Conference on September 26 and 27 Progressive economists and social scientists should research an economy that works for working people. Productive and reproductive labor are the driving forces of society. Recent debates on labor shortages and the care crisis emphasize that centrality, at the same time the literature consistently shows that inflation, the climate crisis and political polarization over-proportionally impact workers, the unemployed and those primarily performing unpaid care labor. This year's Young Economists Conference fosters debates on the dynamics and inequalities of labor, current realities as well as proposals for future changes. A thorough and multi-disciplinary analysis can provide a realistic understanding of the economy and the groundwork for necessary change. The Chamber of Labor Vienna, the Chamber of Labor Upper Austria, the Society for Pluralism in Economics Vienna and INET’s Young Scholars’ Initiative as well as many partner organizations will host the 13th Young Economists Conference on September 26 and 27, 2024 in Vienna, Austria. We invite researchers in the early stages of their career (Master, pre- or post-doc) from all professions, especially economics, political sciences and sociology, to submit their work. We especially encourage female and LGBTIQ* contributors as well as researchers of color and first generation academics to present at the conference. Keynote speakers will be announced soon. The deadline for abstracts (maximum 1 page) is May 17, 2024. Participants will be notified of acceptance by July 2024, the deadline for the submission of full (working) papers for consideration for the Eduard März Preis is August 26, 2024. The conference language is English. The conference is free of charge, presenting participants will be reimbursed for train travel cost within Austria, accommodations are paid for as well. An outstanding contribution will be awarded the Eduard März Prize of €1,000. Mai - 10:30 Uhr Institut für Höhere Studien, Josefstädter Straße 39, 1080 Wien ________________________________ Bürger:innen-Räte gelten als vielversprechendes Instrument zur Bewältigung komplexer gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen und werden weltweit immer häufiger als Instrument der Entscheidungsfindung in Demokratien eingesetzt. In diesem Kontext repräsentierte die Dialogveranstaltung "Österreich am Wort" eine innovative Plattform, die es Bürger:innen ermöglichte, sich aktiv in den politischen Prozess einzubringen. Zwischen Mai und Dezember 2023 führte das Institut für Höhere Studien mit weiteren Institutionen unter Leitung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaft eine eingehende wissenschaftliche Analyse der Corona-Krise durch. Das mehrteilige Design von fünf Fallbeispielen und dem Bürger:innen-Rat "Österreich am Wort" war nicht nur darauf ausgerichtet, politische Ziele umzusetzen, sondern hat auch dazu beigetragen, die Forschung im Bereich Bürger:innen-Räte voranzutreiben. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung "Österreich am Wort" beschäftigen sich Katharina Gangl (IHS-Forschungsgruppenleiterin "Verhaltensökonomik") und Gerhard Riener (University of Southamton, IHS-Fellow) näher mit Bürger:innen-Räten als demokratiefördernde Instrumente und erläutern, welche Lehren aus der vorliegenden Studie zur Aufarbeitung der Corona-Krise für die Zukunft gezogen werden können. Im Anschluss an die Präsentation der Forschungserkenntnisse stehen beide Expert:innen für Fragen und zur Diskussion zur Verfügung.
