Dear colleagues, The Department of Economics cordially invites you to the WU Economics Research Seminar on Monday, April 29th, with Ariel BenYishay (William & Mary, University of Maryland) on "Landmine clearance and economic development: Evidence from Satellites, Surveys, and Conflict Events in Afghanistan" Abstract: The widespread prevalence of unexploded landmines in many countries leads to thousands of deaths and injuries annually. In addition, landmines may impede the flow of goods and people; this not only restricts trade and labor flows, but also hinders access to schools and medical care. Moreover, landmines can block the productive use of contaminated land. We study the clearance of more than 15,000 hazardous areas in Afghanistan carried out since 1992, obtaining precise geographic boundaries for these areas. We identify a window during which a policy shift in clearance targeting created plausibly exogenous variation in the timing of clearance, which we study using a two-way fixed effects panel design. The clearance of hazardous areas leads to changes in land use observed using multispectral, moderate-resolution Landsat-series imagery, as well as to increases in economic activity reflected in nighttime lights data. Our precise clearance data and satellite imagery allows us to observe the shifts occurring even in the small towns and villages that comprise most of our sample. We also find reductions in conflict risks due to the clearance of hazardous areas. Landmine action efforts thus appear to have substantial economic effects even in areas with ongoing conflict risks. Pedro Carneiro will talk about: ‘Do Teacher Behaviors Predict Achievement, Executive Function, and Non-Cognitive Outcomes in Elementary School?’ (with A. Campos, Y. Cruz-Aguayo, C. Echeverri and N. Schady) Time and venue: April 23, Tuesday, 11.15am – 12.30pm, at Quellenstrasse 51 (Vienna), QS B-505. Abstract: We use an experiment with five consecutive rounds of random assignment and almost perfect compliance to estimate how the quality of teacher-child interactions affects child outcomes throughout elementary school. We estimate linear and CES production functions for different skills, where inputs are the quality of the teacher-child interactions in each grade. We find modest impacts of teacher behaviors on math and language achievement, and executive function, which similar across grades. These impacts fade-out over time, except for kindergarten teachers, for whom impacts increase over time. The quality of teacher-child interactions is highly substitutable across grades. Finally, we show that children do not exert more effort at school or read more at home in response to differences in teacher quality, and teachers do not exhibit different behaviors when, by chance, they are randomly assigned to children of varying characteristics. Using a dataset of sales listings, we find that house price dispersion has significantly increased, which is driven entirely by rising price variation across postal codes. We show that both price divergence across labor market regions and widening spatial price variation within these regions are important factors for this trend. We propose and estimate a directed search model of the housing market to understand the driving forces of rising spatial price dispersion, highlighting the role of housing supply, housing demand and frictions in the matching process between buyers and sellers. While both shifts in housing supply and housing demand matter for overall price increases and for regional divergence, we find that variation in housing demand is the primary factor contributing to the widening spatial dispersion within labor market regions. and on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 4:00-5:30 pm (Seminarroom DB yellow 04, Freihaus Buidling, yellow area, 4th floor) Piotr Denderski (University of Leicester) https://sites.google.com/site/piotrdenderski/ "Wealth, Quits and Layoffs" Using worker-level panel data we document that current wealth predicts the probability that a worker transitions from employment to non-employment. Low-wealth workers face higher probability than the median worker, but so do the high-wealth workers. This U-shaped relationship is robust to a battery of controls and suggests that wealth feeds back into the income process, creating a novel interaction between wealth and income distributions. We extend the standard incomplete markets model a la Aiyagari-Bewley-Huggett to include search frictions and jobs with heterogeneous unemployment risk and show that it can replicate our findings because i) low wealth workers optimally accept higher risk jobs in order to leave unemployment faster, and ii) high wealth workers voluntarily quit to enjoy more leisure. Accounting for the non-trivial interactions between wealth and non-employment matters for the quantification of the precautionary savings motive, wealth distribution, and wealth mobility.
