October 2023, 15:00 at the INEQ Institute D3.0.259<https://campus.wu.ac.at/de/?campus=1&q=001_40_EG01_005200#map> (WU Vienna University of Economics and Business). Abstract What are the societal consequences of economic inequality, and how do concerns for these consequences affect individuals' redistributive preferences? This paper examines beliefs about how economic inequality changes society, and establishes a causal link between such inequality externality beliefs and redistributive preferences. Using two representative surveys of a combined 6,731 U.S. citizens, we show that a majority of respondents believe that inequality leads to negative societal outcomes through channels such as increased crime, deteriorating democratic institutions, and diminished economic growth. We establish a causal link from individuals' inequality externality beliefs to their redistributive preferences by using exogenously provided video information treatments. With this and other methods we estimate that inequality externality beliefs are about two-thirds as impactful for individuals' redistributive preferences as broad economic fairness views. Although Democrats are more likely to believe in the negative consequences of inequality than Republicans, beliefs are surprisingly similar across political parties and less polarized than comparable fairness views. Inequality externality-based arguments cause less anger among respondents than fairness-based arguments, however, indicating structural differences in the two types of arguments. Abstract: Population-based cancer screening has been shown to lower cancer mortality. Therefore, the European Union recommends implementing screening programmes in healthcare systems. The presented study investigates the complexity of cancer screening attendance and non-attendance among Czech and European women using a mixed-methods approach. First, data from EHIS 2019 are used to estimate attendance rates in European countries and investigate educational inequalities in attendance. Second, data from health insurance are used to have a closer look on attendance rates in Czechia. Third, data from representative questionnaire survey serve for finding reasons for non-attendance and whether they differ by socioeconomic and demographic variables. Lastly, semi-structured interviews are used to get an even better understanding of the reasons for non-attendance. Having a better understanding of women who are non-attendees in screening could help the screening attendance and lower the cancer burden. About the presenter: Anna Altová is a PhD student in the Department of Demography and Geodemography, Faculty of Science, Charles University. She has a background in demography and social epidemiology and has always been interested in health and prevention. In her PhD project, she focusses on screening attendance, especially among Czech women (breast and cervical screening). She is an EDSD 2019/20 alumna and also one of the organisers of the Young Demographers Conference. Parallel dazu findet seit 2021 jährlich ein von Bundesverwaltung und Zivilgesellschaft gemeinsam getragenes SDG-Dialogforum statt, das den Umsetzungswillen weiter bestärken soll. Der diesjährige Event mit einem politischen high-level Diskurs mit Teilnahme auf Minister-Ebene ist für 12. Oktober 2023 vorgesehen. Im Vorfeld dieser politischen Debatte finden vorbereitende Innovationspools (Workshops) statt, welche die Schwerpunktthemen des ersten FNU (Klima, Soziales, Digitalisierung) weiterentwickeln. Das BMAW hatte im 1. FNU den Schwerpunkt-Bereich Digitalisierung diskutiert, über die letzten beiden Jahre hat sich daraus die breitere Thematik der „Skills für 2030“ entwickelt. Der Innovationspool 2022 ersuchte das BMAW um die Erstellung eines Mappings/einer Landkarte der „Skills für 2030“ in Österreich. Das BMAW beauftragte die Universität für Weiterbildung Krems mit dem Studienprojekt „Skills für 2030“ zur Erreichung der Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in dem internationale Rahmenkonzepte zum Thema Future Skills mit einen Mapping/einer Landkarte gegenständlicher Initiativen in der „Skills für 2030“ in Österreich kombiniert werden sollen. Ziel ist es, Schwerpunkte zu erfassen, allfällige Lücken sichtbar zu machen und Handlungsmöglichkeiten zu entwickeln. Specifically, we examine how the demand for interpersonal skills in trade and gender-specific differences in negotiations are related to the remuneration of men and women. Our key finding is that export of goods that are intensive in interpersonal contacts widens the gender wage gap. The negative wage effect is robust across various specifications and is most pronounced for domestic exporting firms, which mainly deal with external contractors. We ascribe this result to a male comparative advantage in bargaining—a skill that is especially needed and rewarded when serving foreign markets, where intense contracting problems manifest themselves. The 2030 Agenda provides an internationally binding framework in which all dimensions of sustainable development are systematically taken into account to ensure a good life for all in accordance with the principle of “Leaving no one behind”. Four years after the first Voluntary National Implementation Report 2020 (FNU), which presents the progress made towards achieving the SDGs, the second Austrian FNU is to be presented in New York in July 2024. Preparations for this have already begun. In parallel, an annual SDG dialogue forum has been held since 2021, jointly supported by the federal administration and civil society, to further strengthen the will to implement the SDGs. This year’s event with a political high-level discourse with participation at ministerial level is scheduled for 12 October 2023. In the run-up to this political debate, preparatory innovation pools (workshops) will be held to further develop the focal topics of the first FNU (climate, social affairs, digitalisation). The BMAW had discussed the priority area of digitalisation in the 1st FNU, over the last two years this has developed into the broader topic of “Skills for 2030”. The Innovation Pool 2022 asked the BMAW to create a mapping of the “Skills for 2030” in Austria. The BMAW commissioned the University of Continuing Education Krems with the study project “Skills for 2030” to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which international framework concepts on the topic of future skills are to be combined with a mapping/map of concrete initiatives in the “Skills for 2030” in Austria. The aim is to identify focal points, make any gaps visible and develop possibilities for action. Subsequently, the results of the study will be incorporated into the overall preparatory process of the second FNU Austria as well as into the political debate of the SDG Dialogue Forum 2023 via the Innovation Pool 2023 on the topic of “Skills for 2030”. Specifically, we examine how the demand for interpersonal skills in trade and gender-specific differences in negotiations are related to the remuneration of men and women. Our key finding is that export of goods that are intensive in interpersonal contacts widens the gender wage gap. The negative wage effect is robust across various specifications and is most pronounced for domestic exporting firms, which mainly deal with external contractors. We ascribe this result to a male comparative advantage in bargaining—a skill that is especially needed and rewarded when serving foreign markets, where intense contracting problems manifest themselves. He is best known for his analysis of the vulnerabilities of the international monetary system—the “Triffin dilemma”—, but he also played a key role in the debates on European monetary integration, especially as the monetary advisor of Jean Monnet. With his proposals for a European Reserve Fund and a European currency unit, he became one of the intellectual fathers of Europe"s single currency, the euro. The biography “Robert Triffin: A Life”<https://academic.oup.com/book/39700?login=true> by Ivo Maes and Ilaria Pasotti evaluates what made Triffin a crucial figure in modern economic history. With an emphasis on the ideas that shaped the postwar international system, the book explores both the man and the mission. In addition to analyzing his work in economics and policymaking, the authors trace Triffin"s story from a very modest background, as the son of a butcher in Flobecq, who grew up through the interwar period, to a singularly influential economist in the late twentieth century. Ivo Maes (University of Louvain, ICHEC Brussels Management School) will present key findings from the biography, highlighting what we can learn from Robert Triffin for today’s challenges. Die Agenda 2030 bietet einen international verbindlichen Rahmen, in dem systematisch alle Dimensionen der nachhaltigen Entwicklung berücksichtigt werden und so ein gutes Leben für alle gemäß dem Grundsatz „Leaving no one behind“ gewährleistet werden soll. Vier Jahre nach dem ersten Freiwilligen Nationalen Umsetzungsbericht 2020 (FNU),<https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/content/documents/26661VNR_2020_Austr…> in dem die Fortschritte zur Erreichung der SDGs dargestellt werden, soll im Juli 2024 der zweite österreichische FNU in New York präsentiert werden. Die Vorbereitungsarbeiten dazu sind bereits angelaufen. Parallel dazu findet seit 2021 jährlich ein von Bundesverwaltung und Zivilgesellschaft gemeinsam getragenes SDG-Dialogforum statt, das den Umsetzungswillen weiter bestärken soll. Der diesjährige Event mit einem politischen high-level Diskurs mit Teilnahme auf Minister-Ebene ist für 12. Oktober 2023 vorgesehen. Im Vorfeld dieser politischen Debatte finden vorbereitende Innovationspools (Workshops) statt, welche die Schwerpunktthemen des ersten FNU (Klima, Soziales, Digitalisierung) weiterentwickeln. Das BMAW hatte im 1. FNU den Schwerpunkt-Bereich Digitalisierung diskutiert, über die letzten beiden Jahre hat sich daraus die breitere Thematik der „Skills für 2030“ entwickelt. Der Innovationspool 2022 ersuchte das BMAW um die Erstellung eines Mappings/einer Landkarte der „Skills für 2030“ in Österreich. Das BMAW beauftragte die Universität für Weiterbildung Krems mit dem Studienprojekt „Skills für 2030“ zur Erreichung der Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in dem internationale Rahmenkonzepte zum Thema Future Skills mit einen Mapping/einer Landkarte gegenständlicher Initiativen in der „Skills für 2030“ in Österreich kombiniert werden sollen. Ziel ist es, Schwerpunkte zu erfassen, allfällige Lücken sichtbar zu machen und Handlungsmöglichkeiten zu entwickeln. Specifically, we examine how the demand for interpersonal skills in trade and gender-specific differences in negotiations are related to the remuneration of men and women. Our key finding is that export of goods that are intensive in interpersonal contacts widens the gender wage gap. The negative wage effect is robust across various specifications and is most pronounced for domestic exporting firms, which mainly deal with external contractors. We ascribe this result to a male comparative advantage in bargaining—a skill that is especially needed and rewarded when serving foreign markets, where intense contracting problems manifest themselves. The main objective of the conference is to provide a platform for economists working in the field of ‘International Economics’ to present recent research. Papers from Ph.D. students, young faculty members and young researchers in similar positions are particularly welcome as the conference aims to support and encourage young economists by providing an opportunity to present their work to fellow junior economists as well as experienced senior researchers. The conference also aims at bringing together researchers and policy makers to provide a forum for discussion on how empirical evidence can more effectively inform actual economic policy making. TIME & LOCATION The 16th FIW Research Conference on ‘International Economics’ will take place on Thursday, 22nd February 2024 and Friday, 23rd February 2024 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), Welthandelsplatz 1, 1020 Vienna. PAPER SUBMISSION We invite the submission of (full) working papers on all topics in the field of International Economics. The 2030 Agenda provides an internationally binding framework in which all dimensions of sustainable development are systematically taken into account to ensure a good life for all in accordance with the principle of “Leaving no one behind”. Four years after the first Voluntary National Implementation Report 2020 (FNU), which presents the progress made towards achieving the SDGs, the second Austrian FNU is to be presented in New York in July 2024. Preparations for this have already begun. In parallel, an annual SDG dialogue forum has been held since 2021, jointly supported by the federal administration and civil society, to further strengthen the will to implement the SDGs. This year’s event with a political high-level discourse with participation at ministerial level is scheduled for 12 October 2023. In the run-up to this political debate, preparatory innovation pools (workshops) will be held to further develop the focal topics of the first FNU (climate, social affairs, digitalisation). The BMAW had discussed the priority area of digitalisation in the 1st FNU, over the last two years this has developed into the broader topic of “Skills for 2030”. The Innovation Pool 2022 asked the BMAW to create a mapping of the “Skills for 2030” in Austria. The BMAW commissioned the University of Continuing Education Krems with the study project “Skills for 2030” to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which international framework concepts on the topic of future skills are to be combined with a mapping/map of concrete initiatives in the “Skills for 2030” in Austria. The aim is to identify focal points, make any gaps visible and develop possibilities for action. Subsequently, the results of the study will be incorporated into the overall preparatory process of the second FNU Austria as well as into the political debate of the SDG Dialogue Forum 2023 via the Innovation Pool 2023 on the topic of “Skills for 2030”.
